Maybe that sums up the mindset of the team in 14/15 a lot though mate, same players didnt seem to want the derby or any big away game either judging by there efforts
Maybe, but when I suggested we could still get in it, it was laughed at, it wasn't even close, it was a clear mind set. He's also still there.

More English clubs have won the Champions League than the Europa League in the last 15 years. Indeed, Chelsea won it when dropping out of the Champions League - before that, the only English club to win it by qualifying "normally" was Liverpool in 2001; before it was even called the Europa League.

Celtic, Boro, Rangers, Fulham and Liverpool have all reached the final and lost over the last dozen or so years mate

no one is saying it's the only thing that matters, just an additional selling point in recruitment. Those in favor of EL are saying it'd be useful to be able to offer potential signees, say 100k a week AND play in a European competition.

A team like West Brom would need more than Europa to attract players, but a team like us, as you say, that could offer the wages AND Europa football, well thats the clincher.

  • Analysing the last six seasons of data, the average points per game for teams while active in UEFA club competitions is 1.68. This compares favourably with the 1.61 points per game average for all matches after teams have been eliminated from competition. Although the gap is not significant, this clearly demonstrates that participating in UEFA club competitions does not have an adverse effect on league form while active in competition.
  • Over the six-year period, teams in UEFA club competitions picked up 1.74 points per match in domestic league games played within five days of a UEFA club competition match – the same number as when they do not have a UEFA club competition match within five days. When the timeframe is reduced to three days only, the average actually increases to 1.81 points per game.

As noted previously, its only the english attitude towards the Europa which means its a drain. You get told enough times its not worth it you eventually believe it.

thehn again was that attitude a result of the season falling to pieces because the manager put all his eggs in that basket mate?

A team with the appaling levels of fitness we had around that time - yup it will be absolutely crucified by playing all those extra games

Again, I'm not going to argue with that.

Many, well some, European leagues actually help their EL and CL teams with domestic fixtures mind. An English side might fly into Heathrow at 5 on Friday morning after an 8 hour flight from god only knows, with an away, Sunday lunchtime fixture 300 miles away.

The European sides will have a gentle, home match, Monday night, against tosh.

Yes, I remember seeing stats somewhere which proved it has no more bearing on your league position than the CL.
I'm not sure though, I can't seem to get into that Thursday night footy, although that might be because the blues are not involved.
Wouldn't mind the odd jolly around Europe though.

I don't think anyone is advocating sacking the whole competition off as if it was worthless, the competition clearly has value, but I would hope we could play most of our second string in the group games, as the drain that it can have on the first team is not worth it.

Quite right. Most also have winter breaks too and so those UEFA wide stats skews any results our clubs have.

Only PL specific stats can be meaningful.

I would also say not getting another top class forward in during the window stopped any chance of us getting into top 4. A loan deal for someone like Batshuyai or a clever punt on someone abroad for big money might have massively paid off.

Also, winter break in some leagues.
