Player Valuation: £950k
Seen a few people on websites and the forum worrying about some of our players being too lightweight.

Is there really no space for diddy men in football anymore?

Lets bring in barry bonds and all of his steroids. No one will ever call us lightweight again.

heheh I quite like seeing a couple of ankle biters in the team - i get a bit fed up of people using the term to dismiss players

Although watching us against sides like Bolton and Blackburn is a bit like Hobbits vs Orcs at times.

Not to mention SWP, Lennon, Martins, Roberto Carlos, Saviola (the Argies are famous for their short guys), Romario, Cannavaro was relatively short for a centre back (5'9"), Gerd Muller, Garrincha.

Being a short arse myself I have to stick up for us :D

On the subject of lightweight though, I think it is important that players have a degree of strength. The likes of Maradonna and Pele were both stocky. Messi has great balance and is hard to shake off the ball.

So I think that is equally important as height. After all, Crouch is incredibly tall yet often gets knocked off the ball as easily as AJ. I know that football is essentially an endurance sport so the players can't be huge but I do often wonder why some of the skinny guys don't go in the gym and put on a bit of extra muscle. It would surely help their game a lot.

Yeah thats right, you can be short and naturally strong, like Rooney for example, but if your like Osman, you'd think they would have him on a bulk-up excercise program and diet regime.

But overall if you have the skill, players wont get to you to knock you off the ball, so skill is the overwhelming quality needed.

There is nothing wrong with being lightweight if you have some other skill/attribute to balance it out. The problem with Osman is that he's lightweight, but has no big strength to balance it out. If he were a great dribbler/winger it wouldn't matter.. but he isn't. His main strength (in my eyes) is his heart. He always fights.. but because he's lightweight it doesn't pay out as much as it should.
