When a hometown player like Tom comes along things get difficult for supporters, everyone wants to see him do well and hold down a place on the team. It is a romantic thing, a type of Roy of the Rovers situation, if one of our own can make it then anyone can. Unfortunately in the modern era there is no room for romanticism, it matters not whether you are from down the road or from the other side of the world, the only thing that counts is the result. Tom doesn’t have the qualities to play regularly in the Premier League, he lacks the ability to drive a team forward and he cannot patrol in front of the defence to the degree where he can command a starting place on Everton. He seems to fall somewhere between these rolls. I think he could well play at Championship level football and make a success of it, he has plenty of Premier League experience. His difficulty would be, in my opinion, dropping down and being able to apply himself, he would need to go to another level with the mindset of “this is who I am, this is where I need to prove myself” and not going somewhere with a chip on his shoulder.
I think Tom is a sort of bellwether for Everton, if he is in the team then it indicates that we are not good enough to compete in the Premier League, that said, I wish the lad well, I would like to see him playing regularly for a club, I think he would benefit from playing regularly but I don’t think that it would be Premier League standard.
