Ah the old ironic arsehole thing. It's a great question of our times. Is it better to be an arsehole ironically where you say arsehole things but you know they're arseholeish or is it better to be an arsehole sincerely where you act like an arsehole but you think you're entirely justified?

Freedom of speech is freedom of speech. The difference is when you're enciting hatred, and Boyle is not doing that - if anything, he's only inciting hatred against himself.

And that includes saying, 'that's an arsheholeish thing to say, you arsehole'.

The question isn't whether boyle should be allowed to do his jokes, he should obviously, but whether or not he's a dick and should be treat like a dick for doing it.

So if you had a kid with downs, would it be alright for me to make jokes about kids with downs to you ?

Do you think it's okay to say black people look like monkeys mate ? I mean, it's just a joke, isn't it ?

I honestly don't think I would be offended because I'd know he didn't mean it. I'd be a hypocrite to say his act was okay but then get angry in that instance. If he said it to me on the street, it would be a different issue because it would no longer be part of the show.

Offensive humour is it's own bizzarre sub-category when it comes to comedy. It's understandable why so many people dislike it. My advice is to just not watch it or listen to it if you are offended. Comics like Frankie Boyle aren't telling people to do bad things or enciting hatred. An offensive comment must also be coupled with intent. This is all just my opinion though

Either everything is OK to poke fun at, or nothing is.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think Boyle is a genius, but I don't see much wrong with what he's saying.

South Park had Cartman impersonating a disabled kid to take part in the special olympics and win money.

Family Guy had Chris go out with someone with Downs Syndrome and actual performed a musical number about it.

Or there's the singing diagnosis of "full blown AIDS" etc.

You've totally missed the point.

Nobody is saying he shouldn't be allowed to say what he's saying.

I don't listen to the boring t**t, doesn't stop people quoting his stuff on facebook and saying what a 'top lad' he is.

'"I have a theory about the reason Jordan married a cage fighter - she needed a man strong enough to stop Harvey from ****ing her..."

Yeah, what a lad, mocking a disabled child. 'Its just a joke' is used by people who refuse to accept any responsibility for propagating hurtful and offensive stereotypes. By laughing at Boyle and people like him you're making out that it's okay to spread this crap about a disadvantaged section of society.

But why? All he is doing is sending up the offensive traits of the jokes, therefore making it obvious that they are offensive.

If he was trying to make what he was saying socially acceptable then he'd be a dick, but he's never said "hey everyone, it's OK to think and act like this, join in with me."

This is the kind of stuff that sticks out for me when I think of Boyle:

I just think he's a clever comic who has figured out how to joke offensively without actually being personally offensive. There is a difference.

I respect your opinion mate but I don't agree. Let's just leave it at that and move on shall we? If you want to discuss it further, then we can always start a thread in the Ale House. I don't want to be part to blame for the mods shutting this thread down for going off topic.

In an on-topic point, does anyone know if Samaras is fit to play tonight?
