Question: how many years have to pass without United winning a title, before they're stopped being compared in the media to what they once were under Fergie? 20 years?

Because they’ve got the budget, the backing and the media behind them, never. You’re looking at a closed shop in our lifetime.

Titles schmitles. It's about viewers and subscribers and customers and consumers now. Football is about advertising and gambling and clicks. And yet here we all are, still obsessing because we are the peak of brand loyalty. 😥
We could have all that if we had Taylor Swift as a number 9

I just find it interesting when watching Sky Sports, the Overlap shows etc. and when United are discussed the likes of Neville and Keane always compare current United to their United. Standards have slipped, wouldn't have happened back then, United "should be winning titles" etc.

Many, many great teams from the 80's won titles and no one talks about them with the same expectations anymore. I just wonder if they went say 20-25 years no title do people like that still say "we should be winning titles, we did it in the noughties".

I think that's the way supporters behave and believe, and I'm sure there's an element of that amongst our support too, great sides in living memory.
With Utd they got lucky at the dawn of Sky soccer, having half a team come through at once via academy, meant their outlay could be minimised, minimal or targetted.
Most teams were 'built, as opposed to 'bought'.
There's only mention of teams like ours, Forest's, Villa's etc amongst football supporters, and there's the distinction. And it's what I believe sets things apart. As an Evertonian I was raised a football fan first, which meant I could recognise and appreciate good football (and sportsmanship) regardless, my favourite team were Everton, above all. Lucky enough to see Best, Cruyff, Pele etc and appreciate them. I remember clapping Ian Wright off after he ran our defence ragged.
But now there is blind, tribal cult like worship at the top which is fed and fuelled by the vested interests I mentioned earlier.
Utd are only still relevant because of that media fuelled rivalry and the odd cup win. And that must really, really hurt their actual dwindling supporters.

Well it was 30 years with the rs, so I imagine it will be similar
