Walcott was just a sub at Arsenal and his career was on a downward spiral, Bernard did well in Russia but that's Russia. Gomes had been a good player then went into melt down so you could argue that they were risky buys/loan. You need more than 1 or 2 proven players you need 7 or 8 and they will carry the poorer players (Phil Neville at Man Utd for example). We still need plenty and with the prices of proven players it will be expensive but just small change for the top teams. Then we have to deal with those top teams taking a fancy to our better players. It is getting harder and harder to close the gap.

Bernard was in Ukraine not Russia and was a mainstay in the champions League, even knockout stages which is not quite the same as making the numbers up.

They were all quality in one way or another. Walcott was proven in the league , Bernard an international and gomes a euro winning midfielder.

Unproven is a 20 year old Brazilian with one season in the west.
