City have literally endless reserves of cash, whereas Liverpool and Spurs are still (in theory) beholden to the financial constraints that any prudent company would have to account for. City can afford their players any amount of wages and their redevelopment plan for the stadium and infrastructure make it a far more enticing destination for players looking at additional merchandising and sponsorship deals. They started off getting guff like Robinho, but they learned their lesson and the players started coming as soon as they realized the project was serious.

Players and agents aren't stupid. On paper, City are spending comparable sums of money to Spurs and Liverpool in recent transfer windows but everyone knows the reality of what City can offer and what class of player they can attract. I agree that it's not just what you spend on players that matters, but if you invest in the type of infrastructure and development that City are doing right now (and the kind United have already), you become a far more attractive prospect for a better class of player. And that's all money.
My point isn't that money doesn't necessarily get you CL places of titles. It will. But those objectives can't be expected to be met straight away in a matter, literally, of months. If van Gaal misses a CL spot this season he'll spend next summer and then we can all agree with a season of experience plus massive backing they should be expected to achieve.

Oh, definitely. But I see Van Gaal's tenure as the second year of the post-Ferguson era. They didn't think much of Moyes, and rightfully so, but a lot of their deadwood was highlighted during his reign and promptly cleared out by LVG which helps. I don't think Van Gaal would have done much better than Moyes last year.

He'll do more than sneak it, they'll be comfortably top 4 by season's end. I agree with the lads here, if you throw enough money in the right direction, you'll get a Champions League side. They're far, far away from being potential champions, but buying Di Maria, Herrera and Blind is a good start. They have an advantage over teams who spend comparable amounts of money in that they can attract genuine stars like Di Maria, whereas Spurs and Liverpool usually have to settle on players well down their wishlist.
Doesn't always work like that though, mate. As stated above, City spent hundreds of millions in their first two seasons under the Sheik and didn't get top 4 - and in a less competitive environment than this one.

The word "expect" is dubious for me. It's not about just throwing £150M at it and expecting the matter to solve itself. There's a manager and a lot of players first time into this league, That makes it no cakewalk.
I agree with both of you in a way. You have to give credit to City and United for attracting highest calibre players without being in the Champions League, it takes a serious amount of money to do that. Yaya Toure arrived at City having just won the treble with Barca and Di Maria arrived at United having just won the double at Madrid and they both didn't mind a a lack of CL football, it shows what money can do imo.

But davek is right imo that it's still difficult to get CL in one season no matter how much money you throw at it, I think United will be ahead of schedule if they qualify because they got so many new players and a completely new management, it takes a lot for all the pieces to come together nicely. The crap form of all the others teams basically gave them an immediate ticket back into the CL. If Arsenal and Everton replicated last season's form, there is no chance United would make top 4.

The process did begin last season, yeah. But that was deconstructing the ferguson era rather than reconstructing the new United.

Van Gaal and the players he brought in are new to the league. He needs to blend himself and them with what he inherited. You can't expect to do that in a few months.
