That's so ridiculously stacked.

Imagine if that set of players had been given

*checks Google*

Colombia, Senegal, Croatia, Ukraine and Sweden instead of Portugal x2, France and Brazil to play in the knockout stages of tournaments.

Have you purposely omitted Germany from that? Are you ignoring the fact Croatia are actually a big international side?

I don't even care about England or Southgate but your arguments against him are just silly these days.

Italy, apart from the goal, created feck all.
Well, they have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups. They are, frankly, third rate.

A great result for England, though, and a fine first half. They will be among the contenders to win it next year, but I suspect they'll fall short once more. Not that they are materially inferior to any European side at the moment, really. More the sense that only one good side needs to beat them as opposed to them needing to beat a series of good sides to win the tournament.

Germany were beyond crap in that tournament, and no I’m not ignoring Croatia are a good side, but we lost to them, as we tend to do against good sides under this fraud of a manager. That Sven side would’ve beaten them.

England will never ever be a serious contender to win a tournament under this manager.

Don't worry though mate, this squad Southgate is failing into finals with is better.

Or so I'm told.
I mean Southgate is still not doing a great job and everyone knows it - pants are full as soon as they set out in any serious game for some reason. They'd dominate nearly everyone who's not a "big name" and then set out defensively against anyone good, and you can't do that in elimination parts of tournaments and expect a miracle every time.

If anything both squads are stacked but shockingly underperforming. Partially due to being England, therefore clowns, and partially due to playing some of the worst football you can see against (apparently) "third rate" countries, and doing it on purpose.

In my life, England have never really been a serious contender to win any tournament under any manager.

They overachieved in 1990 and 1996. They are, traditionally, a quarter-final side. Right now, they have as good an environment as ever to win a tournament, mainly because the two European superpowers Italy and Germany - who have won 8 World Cups and 5 European Championships between them - are at historic lows. Southgate has done a very solid job, but he is probably not the man to take advantage of this and win a major title, in my view. A Terry Venables now would be ideal, but thems the breaks.

I mean we were a penalty shoot out away from winning a Euros?

He wins games, gets us to tournaments, and has got us further in tournaments than anyone since the 90's.

He's objectively doing a decent job with a pretty wonky squad if we're being honest.
