Call me crazy but if this was an automatic sending off the assistant could simply tell the ref what happened. But that isn't how it works.

Players surround refs all the time, there is contact all the time and randomly it's a red card but everyone justifies it because you shouldn't touch the ref. Which you shouldn't! Just referee it the same every time.

What are you talking about? The referee takes the assistants word on offside or when he flags a foul but has to question when he says someone should be sent off? You're being serious?

I never said they wouldn't tell them. I said would the referee just go "okay" and send that player off.

The ref might go ask the fourth official as well, but in most cases they are there to work as a team and the ref will generally trust their assistants

I mean, with VAR, don’t they tell the ref if they’ve seen an infraction and the ref goes along with it?

It’s not like they check the screen every time

I don’t think the linesman telling them is much of a jump
