You're allowed to look into teams and players before you watch them. I don't really understand why this is so controversial, and I don't mean just you, this idea that until you watch something football related you can't possibly know anything about it. It is just odd to me.

Sometimes I watch a team or player and feel like I know less than before.

You haven't watched them though so all this post is irrelevant.

I most certainly can't have football knowledge about how a team/manager works without watching them. You are correct.
Just an insane gap in logic. Can't even wrap my head around it.

And that is without even getting into the self importance it takes to think what someone who knows more than you (I don't mean me before anyone starts, but smart people write about football on this internet thing) writes or produces some other way on a subject is less valuable than your own observations.

But you haven't got any observations why is this so hard for you to grasp?

The problem is people form these opinions on romantic ideas like this and then they spend two years convinced that Bernard is amazing while the numbers correctly say he's a bit crap. You can't just do one of the two. Football is both now.
Romantic ideas my arse .. as true today as they ever were!

You can prove or disprove most things using stats alone

Barcelona's most successful period was formed on these principals laid down by Cruyff and built on by others.

Its all about how effective you are on the pitch and how you influence a game and stats cant give you that alone.

I could give you many examples but here's one. Positional sense!

Just by being in the right or wrong position in response to either an attacking or defensive move can make all of the difference. Not seen a stat for that because its intangible and you cannot accurately measure it

There is only 1 stat that matters and thats the final score the rest is for arm chair fans or statto's

Thomas Tuchel disagrees with this idea is where this whole thing started.

Positional sense is represented organically in the stats a lot of times. This is an extreme example but lets say you had a striker who never went into the opponent's box. Obviously you'd say he has no positional sense and this would show up when you looked at a number like expected goals as he would not be able to get on the end of decent chances to achieve a high value in that category. So while no the stat doesn't say he can't get to the right spots directly you also aren't ignoring that factor when you rely on that particular stat. This happens other places. Interceptions, clearances, and plenty of others.

Again I'm not anything like an expert on this, but people are out there who are and a lot of the problems that people come up with for why stats are bad they've already taken into account as they try to improve them because their whole job is figuring out what issues they might be having in their design of the metrics.
