No it means I don't know. I'm not sure what he is exactly.

That said I can read. And I'd be surprised if a team that is scoring and allowing about one goal a game and getting out shot every week is playing on the front foot a lot. But then maybe one day I'll watch Derby and they will be because I don't know.

And there we have it, the ol' stats > eyes Brighton Syndrome. Never change mate.

Its been said ,by a fellow blue, that the only time since ,the war 2nd,that we have won anything is when an
ex player has been manager.Catterick,Kendal and Royle. And my same pal suggested at
some later stage a combination of good old Dunc and Rooney in charge could be a winner.?
Would like to see Rooney spend 4 or 5 yrs learning his trade before, if ever, he comes here. If he is succesful, then I would be very happy to see him here.

Well it's not both; you haven't used your eyes on Derby County.

I have no opinion on Rooney as a manager, as I shouldn't, since I've never seen his side play.
I applaud you and all of those who refuse to move into the era where numbers matter in football. Stick to your guns.

Meanwhile the manager of the European champions said this recently: "In the last games it was absolutely like this, we had clean sheets, we deserved to have clean sheets and we kept the expected goals very, very low. This is something that we look into, you cannot rely just on results. The result is too often misleading in football, such a huge factor is also luck and bad luck in games. We are looking into this but recently we are very happy with the development." This is where the game is going, like it or not.

The managers, etc. can look at their stats. The game going that way, great, whatever floats the managers boat. That is fine by me but I am not a manager, I am a fan. it is when fans start talking like this that I cringe.

My opinions come from watching games, I am not going to sit there after not watching a game and say, well they had x number of avg. metres run, they had x number of passes completed, they had x number of touches in the box, they had x number, blah, blah, blah. When I discuss a game with a mate my comments are 'we missed loads of chances' or 'we should have put it in the box more'. Not, 'you know what, we had so much XG, we should have scored 1.5 goals today'.

Fans who start talking about expected goals and progressive this and number of idea balls, etc. are just talking out of their arse. If I watch a game I can form an opinion, if I don't then I can't because football is not just about numbers.

That's fine. I can't tell you what to do. I think if you ignore the numbers you're not really making an attempt to fully understand what is happening not just in football but in any sport that has put time into developing these types of things. And you're right football is not just about numbers. At the same time saying numbers in football don't matter at all is also wrong.

Yes, but have you looked at the shots blocked, the crosses, how far away those crosses were away from players.

A team can technically dominate a game where the other team has more shots, and I am not just talking about possession, I am talking about more chances or at least the opportunity to create a chance. You may see the expected goals low but how do you know that they did not have 30 crosses in the box but the quality from the player(s) was poor, on the day. Whereas the other team had 5 more shots but they were all from 30 yards out and nowhere near going in, even those on target.

Stats do not tell the whole story. In football you have to watch a match to truly gauge an opinion on that match.

Fwiw there are stats for literally every single thing you've mentioned. This stuff is very advanced and pretty much every "what about this" scenario has been considered. There is no perfect one size fits all approach obviously, the game is entirely too complex, but the dismissive attitude is funny when a lot of the reasons for dismissing it can actually be answered by studying the numbers to an extent.

I like how you're just completely deflecting from being called out for forming an opinion on football by not watching football.

I'll leave it to Johann Cruyff to put into words what forms peoples opinions when they go and watch the game live.

I've never seen a stat that can summarized this.

Be like Johan!

The problem is people form these opinions on romantic ideas like this and then they spend two years convinced that Bernard is amazing while the numbers correctly say he's a bit crap. You can't just do one of the two. Football is both now.

You're allowed to look into teams and players before you watch them. I don't really understand why this is so controversial, and I don't mean just you, this idea that until you watch something football related you can't possibly know anything about it. It is just odd to me.

Sometimes I watch a team or player and feel like I know less than before.
