We're a good three seasons away from even being at the level West Ham, Wolves and Leicester have been at. If we want to go beyond that it is going to be a long process. I'm talking a decade. We have to rebuild the whole club top to bottom. We can't outspend anyone so it has to be done different.

On that we absolutely agree. When you consider Moyes left 9 years ago and look at what that (almost) decade has brought, I think it should come as no surprise to even the most impatient fan that at least the same timeframe again is needed to reverse those errors, let alone progress past where we were before.

It could be an exciting process though. Palace have got a lot right in their first crack at recruitment since they jettisoned their crap. I’d take “occasionally exciting mid-table also rans” as the next step in our progression!

I said it last summer unfortunately around the now failed signing of Diaz. If we can't be good at least be fun. Diaz turned out to be good also but I just saw a fun player and thought more of that could be cool.

Part of why I'm not totally sold on Lampard is that even if playing this defensive mush can bring acceptable results it is going to get tedious fast. We definitely can get those same results playing reasonably.
