I understand that thinking, but its the World Cup. To win it means becoming World Champions. If you don't get there by beating the best of the best, it's only belittling your own accomplishment.
I think England should definitely play to win tonight. If that means facing Brazil in the quarters and France or whoever in the semi's then that's how it should be.

to be honest I would have sat some players but tried to win it. Yea that side of the bracket is fierce but Bel gets Japan in round 1 (think Mexico has a very good shot at knocking out Brasil). England has an easier QF, if they can get there.

I just don't feel much affinity to the England team. If they win or lose I'm hardly bothered by either.

It doesn't help that over the last 30 odd years most of our players who become England regulars tend to quickly move on. I'll never forget the national media campaign to get Rooney out of Everton post-Euro 2004 for starters. That summer certainly was the turning point for me in supporting England.

There's only space for one football team in my life and the Blues take up all that room.

I'll always be an Evertonian and an England fan and will support both even through rough times.

I still remember being absolutely gutted after Euro 96 and even remember Italy 90, (the one where Lineker scored - three Lions song) and possibly the worst penalty shoot out disappointment to date, and there have been many.

I still maintain with an injury and suspension crippled Argentina lying in wait, that Italy 90 semi final penalty shoot-out was almost as good as for the World Cup itself, Germany won the shoot out and the final, we've never been so close since and only once before.

All those years of hurt never stopped me dreaming lol

What a day today has been though

Probably the best day of the whole World Cup

The day it really caught fire, what a day, this World Cup is turning into something very special indeed.

We'll look back in ten and thirty years and think that's what a World Cup should be like.

Today was absolutely special and brilliant

It is quite easy for me to feel a strong affinity with England given the amount of Spurs players in the squad although i would still support the team even if we all Gooners (barf).

If we manage to beat Columbia i will start to get REALLY excited.

IN-GER-LUND IN-GER-LUND IN-GER-LUND!!!

Just to clarify things, I'm an extremely proud Welshman. I was born in Wales, I speak Welsh, and love everything about my nation. When we played in the Euros, I (rather unexpectedly) cried when our national anthem rang out in the first game.

But I will also say that I've grown to like this England team.

There's none of that hysterical ego-driven drama that we usually see, they all seem fairly well rounded.

They play a brand of football that best represents everything good about the British game, and most of their supporters seem to be hilariously self-deprecating.

I'll watch on Tuesday with a little more invested emotion than I have done up to this point.

It's not at all hard to make a case that this WC is as good or better than any before, not every match has been top entertainment and perhaps the very worst being the France vs Denmark meaningless draw. There may have been boring games and no matter the heights it reaches you inevitably won't please everyone.

Even i can name some undoubted highlights very quickly though,

Spain and Portugal's 3-3 thriller,

Spain and Morocco's 2-2 and dramatic last minute drama,

Croatia's 3-0 hammering Argentina,

The excitement of Germany's shock loss to Mexico and eventual elimination,

Argentina and Rojo's cruel late blow for Nigerian hopes

South Korea's shock humiliation of Germany,

The agony for Senegal of losing out to Japan over the fair play tiebreaker

Arguably the match of the tournament knockout phase France's 4-3 triumph over Argentina

Uruguay's clinical finishing on the platform of a solid defence proving too much for Portugal,

The shock of Spain going out on penalties to the brave and unfancied hosts Russia

Belgium's remarkable late comeback when it had looked as though the Japanese might cause another giant upset.

More penalty shootout sudden death drama with Croatia beating a valiant Denmark and England beating Colombia despite a last minute leveller.

Harry Kane's coming of age at the World's premier national team tournament.

Huge shocks, high drama, last minute twists and some truly exceptional football matches

More goals on average than any previous world cup, more correct decisions from the officials and such an open draw playing out with Spain, Germany, Argentina and Portugal out.

With the mouthwatering prospect of France and Uruguay and Brazil vs Belgium on Friday I can't wait.

Its just probably setting a new higher standard that future World Cup's might possibly struggle to even get near.

but other than all that its been dreadful.

As to the poll i'll always be an Evertonian and an England fan and will support both even through rough times, however the way the positive answer to the poll is termed stops me selecting any option at all..

I still remember being absolutely gutted after Euro 96 and even remember Italy 90, (the one where Lineker scored - three Lions song) and possibly the worst penalty shoot out disappointment to date, and there have been many.
