Tipping in a pub/bar around the UK

Because you shouldn't expect great service and then not tip.
But isn't that what they get paid to do though ? They get an hourly rate in the UK unless im mistaken. Thats the job they applied to do, thats the job they are paid to do and like any other job, if you're not performing (in this instance great service) then you're out of a job.

Absolutely no need to tip in the UK as they are paid an hourly wage. If your hourly wage isn't enough for you, then get off your arse and find something more adequate for yourself.

You can expect a good service without tipping, it's what they are paid to do. However most waiters and waitresses go out of their way to try and earn a tip. I think a great service deserves a tip, it's to show you appreciate their service.

I appreciated the service my window cleaner did. Incredible they were. First house with the clean water. Do i tip him too to appreciate that ?

Or how about the lad at the garage who serviced my car. Great service at the time, does he get a tip too ?

NO.... They are paid an hourly wage for a reason and an hourly wage that see's fit for that specific job. Again, if your hourly wage isn't quite doing it for you, update your CV and set about applying for better paid jobs.

If tips didn't exist you'd never get great service from severs. They don't go out of their way for the customer or company, they go out of their way because they'd like a tip.

Say your window cleaner did a few extra windows, you wouldn't have the urge to tip them?

What is your definition of great service ?

I just want he/she to bring my food and drinks to my table. What more do people want.

If i didn't ASK my window cleaner to clean those extra windows, i fail to see why i should reward him for his efforts. Again as has already been mentioned, thats being forced into tipping.

It may sound bad that they give better service to try and get a tip, but it is the truth.

They may be on the same wage as a McDonald's worker, the reason the mcdonalds worker will never go out of their way is because they'll never get a tip.

Nandos seems a good shout for you.

Baffling really.

For one, the server shouldn't have a face like a slapped backside. The amount that do is ridiculous (I don't tip them). A good service is when a server is generally friendly and sorts out any problems and makes sure your dining experience is good and sometimes they just go out of their way for you when other servers have not.

There are countless jobs out there in the service or retail space which do not involve tips as a 'done thing'. That does not stop those people from providing great service in many cases.

Implying that people only provide really good service to get some kind of monetary gain rather than because they take pride in their job is a disgrace and totally misinformed.

I wouldn't go out of my way for a lot of people, there are a lot of snobby horrible customers.

Only pretty girls and handsome men should apply then ?

So your definition of good service is just basically job description. The job they have applied for and are being paid an hourly rate.

Ugly people arent all miserable you know.

Not tipping is just being cheap. Unless you had a bad service.

Its NOT being cheap at all. Thats their job !!! This is the UK where they are paid hourly, an actual wage. Sure it is most likely minimum wage, sure it is probably low and not enough but those that have applied knew this beforehand.

So its the fault of the customer why the person doing the job is paid so poorly ? The only thing 'cheap' here is the actual restaurant or establishment paying their low arse wages in the first place. Its no fault of the customer at all.
