Tipping in a pub/bar around the UK

Its NOT being cheap at all. Thats their job !!! This is the UK where they are paid hourly, an actual wage. Sure it is most likely minimum wage, sure it is probably low and not enough but those that have applied knew this beforehand.

So its the fault of the customer why the person doing the job is paid so poorly ? The only thing 'cheap' here is the actual restaurant or establishment paying their low arse wages in the first place. Its no fault of the customer at all.

At the end of the day most people consider it rude not to leave a tip.

The US is obviously different than the UK with regard to tipping since the hourly minimum wage for "tip-earners" in the US is a third to a quarter of the normal minimum wage. To give you an idea...my paycheck (working full time) every two weeks would be under $15 because income taxes (a percentage of my sales) all came out of my hourly wage.

Here's a tip ;) from someone whose worked on the other side of the bar.

If it's a busy night with people 2-3 deep in front of the bar and you order a labor intensive drink, like a mojito, you better freaking tip. Pulling a pint, pouring a simple mixed drink...no problem, but I might be coming over the bar if you order some layered, multi-step frou-frou drink that's going to take me 10 minutes to make when I'm in the weeds.

Similar in the US, always tip some, but tip well, very well, if you order something labor intensive.

If its the UK ?? which is what the thread is about.

If your 'shift' at the bar is say 6 hours. If one drink took you 6 hours to make, whats the difference ? You're still getting paid the same whether you made one drink or 100.

The difference is the owners income. Volume of sells makes the money for the bar. Higher sales makes me valuable. I keep my job, maybe even get a raise. A rum and coke is probably priced about the same as a mojito (At least it would have been at my bar. Price was based on the liquor not the mixers/labor) I could easily make 10 simple mixed drinks in the time it takes to make something complex.

Ever been out and it takes forever to get your drinks so you and your mates decide to try somewhere else? Or maybe you only end up having 2 drinks instead of 3 during the time you spent because of slow service.

I'd rather one customer be mad and complain than all the other 100 at the bar. I'd also rather have higher sales. So guess who is getting service first and guess who is getting a light pour when I do finally get around to making that frou-frou drink.

once an only time i tried tippin in a local 'keep the rest' (was 18 and slightly unsure if it was a done thingi) and got told politely to take my change, so nope for me

Thats all good and you've explained it well. I'm also aware of everything you have pointed out.

Still doesn't mean that we should tip a job which is getting an hourly wage. Yes its minimum but then so is retail. Do we tip retail employee's ? The last point you made is just basically an attempt to force people into tipping, because in doing so, you'll get served far quicker.

You're employed to do a job and your employer has set your hourly rate adequate for that specific job in hand. In the UK you don't live off your tips. You have two options; have a word with your employer and bring it to their attention that your wage is a bit crap or find a new job with a higher rate. Its simple really. It shouldn't be down to the already paying customer for good service. Good service should be rewarded by your employer as a bonus.

Don't understand tipping, don't get me wrong loved it when I was a waiter myself but the missus tells us to tip the takeaway driver, taxi driver, where do you draw the line? I don't get a tip in my job so why should I tip someone else?

This really.

Ive worked in retail and had other jobs that involved day to day customer interaction, never once did I expect nor did I ever receive a tip, most were min wage crappy jobs.

generous man are you...

ffs meant tip obviously ^^ 'top' i dont even know if thats good my mates are tight asses
and dont tip lol and homeless people when im out randomly giving fivers out
they need it more though i guess so cant complain but ffs no wonder i always come home skint

Most people also think that egg cholesterol is bad for the heart.

What 'most people' think has never been a solid barometer with which to judge anything at all.

It plays a significant role in the development of the super-ego though, which in turn will impact upon their ego, which governs their behaviour. Which is why some people choose to tip through fear of being labelled as a mingebag, and not because they want to pay an extra 60% for a taxi journey. The threat of being labelled a mingebag doesn't necessarily have to come from somebody else, it comes from the person choosing to tip.
