Maybe this difference of opinions re. Howard is a cultural thing. When I was a kid, we always expected British keepers to command their penalty area and come and claim the ball wherever possible, if they were confident they could get there. I seem to recall there was a perception among the telly pundits of the time (probably wrong) that European keepers didn't like to come for crosses, and when they did they'd always punch, rather than catch. Maybe it's a very British thing and might explain why some of our American fans (and Martinez) fail to see what many of us think is glaringly obvious.
I think it's great that we have so many American posters on this forum. I rarely post myself, but I read a fair bit, and the American contingent certainly add a lot to my enjoyment of the forum, as well as plenty of humour, and it's also good that there are a few regular female posters within that contingent. If some of those Americans became Everton supporters due to Howard playing for us, that's great, too.
A lot has been said in this thread about the fact that when we concede a poor goal it's usually down to errors from more than one player, and it's true that last season (less so this) the defence collectively made a lot of unforced errors. I think I read somewhere that we conceded more goals due to unforced errors than any other PL team last season and Howard certainly wasn't responsible for all of them.
The likes of Barkley and Stones, for example, make mistakes, but we know that what they add to the team more than makes up for it. They're also young, will only get better and we're lucky to have them, so the pros far outweigh the cons. With Howard, for me, the cons have outweighed the pros for quite some time and he's only going to get worse, not better. It's not just me who has that view either. The last time I checked the "Position most in need of a new signing thread", 62% of voters thought we should sign a new keeper, more than twice as many as a new playmaker, despite the fact that we were all desperate for Martinez to sign a playmaker in the summer.
