Tim Howard

He had a bit of an excuse last season. Howard wasn't quite as bad as this season, and Joel didn't look very assured in the games he played. Some of his positional play was suspect last year, but this season Howard has deteriorated and Joel seems to have progressed.
He's been bad for 18 months as Timmy should never have come back in after Robles three clean sheets the home game Tim played at then bottom team Leicester he flapped at two crosse = two goals against, = he should have been dropped there and then! we drew 2-2 when we should have won 2-0 same story in most games since!

My interpretation on this headline is that he can justify leaving out Howard by illustrating that Baines, whom without question, is one of our best players if he cannot be a certain starter neither can Howard.
Very clever or maybe I am wrong, but let us hope.

Aye and Baines won't kick up a fuss about Oviedo playing behind the scenes, he'll just get his head down and train harder which Martinez can also point to if Howard acts up.

Howard and Stones are still injured according to the OS.

I'd be surprised if either one was on the bench tomorrow never mind starting.

I wouldn't take too much notice of the official injured list on the OS, but I too, will be surprised if Howard's even on the bench tomorrow. I'd guess Stones has an outside chance of making the bench though.

The acid test on Howard will be who starts against Villa and West Ham.

Before that, in fact: Bournemouth next week in the cup: if Howard plays in that it would underline the belief that he's now Robles' understudy - given RM's preference to retain his top keeper for PL games..

Villa is the perfect game for Martinez to bring Howard in with the minimum damage (away and an easy game)... That is when we will have a definitive answer.... my guess is Howard will be back in goal for it unfortunately...

Sorry Dave, have to disagree with you there. It doesn't matter if Howard's fit or not, barring an injury to Joel, Robles will start against Bournemouth.
