Tim Howard

Because the vast majority of folk defending him are American mate and a bit blinkered. ( Dougie's just weird ).

If Howard was a proper wool, lets say for arguments sake, he came from a market town in Lancashire, as opposed to a foreign megawool, I too would be defending him as my woolly brethren. However, in my heart, I would know I was doing it for midguided reasons.

So how does that explain my defending of scapegoats of seasons past? And Martinez?

It has nothing to do with nationality.

The only scapegoat I didn't defend in fact was Neville...God I hated him so much.

I don't disagree with much of this as it comes to corners. However, it looks constantly like we never even consider working on this in training....on either end of the pitch. Some of that direction has to come down to Martinez.
Where this argument falls down for me
Is when Moyes was manager. Howard was still rooted to his line and I can remember a number of goals conceded from close range from crosses or set pieces

Even though Moyes was a defensive/negative manager and we would constantly end games with loads of defensive players on the pitch
And we had tall players like lesscott then distain in his prime
Cahill was fantastic in the air

You could have the best defence in the world but if you have a keeper who want come out. You are always going to concede goals

Mate, you're American right, so you're sticking up for one of your own, which is ace, and perfectly understandable. There are a few people in here who just have it in for Howard, but the majority just know he's past his best and it's coming to the time in rejigging the squad, that the goalkeeping position is looking like a priority.

Don't take it to heart, he's been a decent keeper over the years for us, but all players eventually get to a point in their careers where they're not performing consistently at the level they once where. In those circumstances, outfield players can drop to the bench or just get games in cup matches and still make a contribution. For keepers though, it's much more binary and they just tend to get replaced and hardly seen again. That's what's likely to happen with Howard quite soon.
Yes I'm American but not Texan, outside NYC. I didn't defend him last season, would've been hard to. I was a blue before Tim and will be after.

You're just an awkward bugger ! With you, defending Howard just makes you feel good for being contrarian and has nothing to do with your nationality.

But a sizable percentage of his defenders are American. It's certainly a higher percentage of the GOT demographic than you'd expect by the law of averages. There will be some anti-American posters who are biased against him for that reason, but they're probably few and far between.

Schmeichel came and flapped at a few mate. He's decent and may well improve, but he's not exactly top drawer.
Not trying to say sign kaspar, just highlighting the difference between our coward and a reasonable standard of prem keeper, he was pro active and aggressive. Instead of starjumps who usually stays rooted to his line and making some halfassed dive when the balls in the net
