If this is how transfers worked then not many players would move.
The fact is that we are a big club who have some major names in world football playing for us and quite a substantial amount of money. A team like Stoke would find it hard to hold onto Butland if we popped up with £20mil and i suggest he would request a move so he would be in more of a "showcase" with Barkley and Stones for the England team.
When you say £10mil more than they are worth, we are talking about a keeper who can generate 10+ points a season for us rather than costing us points. Additonally its important to remember that such a keeper could be in our side for 15 seasons. Transfer values are increasing year on year so logically in every conceivable way its a good long term purchase.
The decision Martinez has now is firstly whether to sign a keeper at their peak or go for someone of a similar age bracket to the core group. Then he needs to move on someone in England or overseas.
Its all about risk. Does he go for a foreign player who may not adapt to the league or settle in the country OR go for someone with experience in England.
For me, all roads lead to Butland. If there is £20mil (which there should be!) In a transfer pot id be banging down Stokes door.
I feel this position is so important that id be happy with this one signing and then any others coming in from squad player sales.
He also needs to go out and buy the best he possibly can so the rest of the team also see that we are truly going places.
Not everyone needs to buy a new goalkeeper, but the clubs that have goalkeepers aren't going to want to give them away. Stoke, Leicester, West Ham: none of them have any reason to sell their goalkeeper, so going after Butland or Schmeichel or Adrián means we either waste our time or pay £10 million more than they're worth. Which means we don't have £10 million to spend on a backup for Lukaku or an eventual replacement for Kone.
Roberto Martinez has sensible transfer policies in place, which is why I feel confident in saying we will not be signing someone who is a Premier League starter to replace Howard. That has nothing to do with accepting less than the best, because those guys simply aren't the best. We shouldn't settle for a second or third tier keeper while paying through the nose for him. Feel free to vault me.
