Most goalkeepers get better with age. Schmeichel, Seaman, Martyn, Khan, Buffon, Van Der Saar all got better with age. His defence in front of him is pretty woeful. He's better than Szczesny.
Yeah, they all got better with age, but they were also all elite before they hit the age of 30, far better than Schmeichel. Again, I just don't think you can find anyone who went from an okay to average keeper in his twenties to a really good one in his thirties, and there's no reason to think Schmeichel would. He's a finished product now. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, and if he found himself out in the cold at Leicester I'd say he'd be a good signing, but as it is Leicester would fight tooth and nail to keep him. He's not worth that kind of effort.

@mlyons I find discussing Schmeichel in a Howard thread a bit of a moving of the goalposts as it detracts from how bad Howard currently is. I wouldn't spend vast amounts of money on him though.

The only thing I'll say is that I wonder if our overseas fans have any idea how big a club we really are, no disrespect but a lot of them try to talk about us as a smaller team when it comes to transfers. We have history, a current manager wanting to cement us back in the history books, and the power of TV money behind us. In this situation, as with purchasing Lukaku, we have to show a little bit of NSNO about this.

Having spent the first 10 years of my life with an undiagnosed case of Tourette's syndrome -- a neurological disorder characterized by physical and verbal tics -- I did not experience a lot of peace.

But even though my life often seemed chaotic, I knew I could always count on at least one person to provide calm and stability: my grandmother.

Nana's sense of peace was so powerful because it came from her faith in the Lord.

Through her, God revealed His love for me as well. It wasn't long before I was following in her footsteps. I wanted the same kind of faith and peace she had, and that is exactly what God gave me. (Read Tim's article in Worldwide Challenge.)

That said; living with Tourette's is not easy. But God has blessed me with the gift of athleticism as well.

He has done some powerful things in my life through the combination of these 2 gifts. He also has shown me ways to use my position as a professional athlete to encourage others with Tourette's syndrome.

Today, I am blessed to be living a dream. And yet, if it all went away tomorrow, I know I would still have peace. That probably sounds crazy to most people, but that's the kind of peace Christ gives. It is rooted in His love, and it surpasses all understanding.

You can experience this same sense of love and peace, too. All you have to do isask for it.

If you look individually at the current first choice outfield we have top quality in almost every position....Howard is clearly the weak link.

As you say i think overseas / newer fans wouldnt know our history going back several decades of course.

Interesting you mention purchasing Lukaku. With the players we have currently and those pushing through as well i dont see why we couldnt have made a Yarmolenko signing last summer.

So, logically we should be able to go out and pick and choose pretty much any keeper other than the major names...with our money Germany/Italy/Spain/France should have plenty of choices as well as maybe even South America.

I keep saying also that surely if the next "De Gea" is out there then im confident he would look at Stones, Deulofeu, Barkley, Lukaku etc being of similar age and feel he could really benefit and enjoy playing for us.

A proper inspiration to young toffees everywhere.

A proper inspiration to young toffees everywhere.

I think the danger of ever putting yourself up on a platform of virtue and integrity is that you're on a hiding to nothing when the inevitable happens and any number of sordid and unsavoury stories come out in the media.

I'd much rather my favourite footballers just got on with their day job and played football to the highest level.

Howard is neither an inspiration nor a role model I would choose for any young toffee. Perhaps you disagree but it's a pretty poisoned chalice in my view.

Best to keep the non-football chat away really.

TH prayer for tonight - remember how to challenge for balls crossed into the 6-yard box. I'd certainly chip in half a dozen Hail Marys!

He's dealt with an awful lot and taken solace in religion, he's managed to rise to the pinnacle of the most popular and competitive sport on the plant with a pretty major handicap for a sportsman and is well respected and liked by his peers.

Of course he's an inspiration, and a bloody good one to any child who's wants to reach the top but has been born with health issues.
