Tim Howard

The way he brought Howard straight back into the side last year after Joel had had a very decent run (and Howard had been crap leading up to the injury as well) told me all I need to know about Martinez when it comes issues like this, he has players he will absolutely refuse to leave out if they're fit and Howard is one of them.

I honestly thought Leicester at home last season was his "Neville against Wigan" game where his performance was that appalling that no manager in their right mind would ever dare play him for this club again. Evidently not. The egotistical diva is sadly going to be around for a while longer yet and we will continue to lose vital points in vital games because of it. Martinez deserves just as much criticism for refusing to get rid of the bloody clown.

That was a turning point for me. At Wigan he'd been bold in leaving out Al Habsi for Robles, dropping 'big' names like Gomez and N Zogbia for players in form like Mcmanaman, trusting technical footballers like Maloney etc., switching formations even in games to best the opposition. Wigan took some beatings but it seemed they came from poorer players making mistakes trying to play a great brand of football.

He's done the exact opposite here. When Howard returned to the team I honestly just despaired, look at the message it sent out to everyone else, don't worry about your form because you won't be dropped, and they haven't, McCarthy, Barry, Lukaku, Barkley, Naismith, and of course Howard have all needed dropping form time to time but haven't received it.

All of his other positives from Wigan seem to not have emerged yet. There is no changing formations, he's abandoned any pretence of trying to go three at the back even though he played it really well at Wigan. Technical footballers like Osman, Gibson, Mirallas haven't been favoured under him as more functional players have taken their places Barry McCarthy Naismith Lennon who do not possess the same technique but are seen as being consistent. Our beatings are not coming from mistakes either (well apart from Howard's multiple ones every game) most are just coming from a general lethargic approach where we look as though we're half fit, not at match pace, with no plan of what to do in defence or attack,

I honestly don't know what happened to the innovative brave manager that Martinez was at the back end of Wigan and most of his first season here. It's like once he reached his zenith (the 3-0 home win v Arsenal where I thought we were on for 4th) he's just plummeted miles away from that and pretty much everything since, apart from a few moments of brilliance v United and Chelsea, has been an utter dirge. I still think he's got it in him to be a very good manager but whether he's too far gone or not to find that version of himself again we'll see. Restoring Howard to the starting line up though was the biggest indicator to me that he'd lost the plot last season. I'mm waiting for the indicator that tells me he's re-found it. Nothing we did over summer helped in that department.

Your still buzzing after a Friday night aren't you..

How Martinez deals with the problem that is Howard, will tell me a lot about Martinez

What a great post. Have to agree. It sums up my feelings on Martinez constantly "bottling it". If he doesn't "grow that pair" we talk about he won't make it here.
Mind you, if he is given unlimited time to keep strengthening the squad then it may help him to "grow that pair" we all desire.

He did play better when he took over the responsibility of being captain though, maybe it was just good management.
Sorry Doug but letting in two soft goals down to him even MOTD stated that -
You can not afford to let a team like Arsenal or any other team grab two easy goals down sadly to bad goalkeeping errors on crosses inside his six yard box end of Doug - The fact he did not concede in the 2nd half is immaterial we should have gone in at half time 1-0 up with a lucky goal!
Ass for commentating yesterday he should have been at Finch farm working on high ball crosses - easy money its the way the game has gone!

Commentator during the game mentioned how a goalkeeper can save you at least 10 points a season - not ours I'm afraid! West Brom, Liverpool and Arsenal on Saturday, 4 headers and 4 goals from inside the six yard box! Even earlier in the game you could see that Arsenal had identified it as an area to target, free kicks and corners pinged in there! If Arsenal have spotted it you can bet every other team has. Like him or not Robles has to be given a go for now, the lad was dropped after three consecutive Premier League clean sheets earlier this year!
