2025/26 Thierno Barry

Tbh I can see why we took a punt on him in a general sense:

  • France U21
  • Good strike rate with Basel and a top 4 league with Villarreal
  • Only 23 years old
With just that in mind, the fee was to be expected...but unfortunately has not really worked out for him obviously. Not sure where we go from here, but I do think he will be here through the Summer at least.

On paper absolutely. But then you watch him and see that he can’t attack headers, is clumsy when travelling with the ball, is weak, has awful body language, can’t pick a pass and doesn’t appear to be able to strike a ball.

I just don't get the logic behind getting Barry in, at all. You want to have strikers who can play different ways, no? Keeps the opponent off balance. But we looked at Beto and thought "you know what? I want to have a second striker in who is tall, lanky, can't control the ball, doesn't pass well, doesn't really hold up the ball, isn't that good at heading and isn't really a lone striker".

.....why? What is it about either of these players that the powers that be thought would be a shrewd move to bring in not one but TWO strikers who are basically the same? And I say basically but Beto is thrice the player Barry is. And that's not really an endorsement of Beto...

He has the worst movement. Doesn't look like a natural striker. I don't know what the scouts saw in him.
True that.

When the fullbacks are looking for an out ball down the line he’s stood in the middle of the two centre halves then makes an half arsed attempt to go down the line.

I think what annoys me more than anything is his mentality and effort. We backed him for a while despite not showing a huge amount then finally seemed to turn a corner a bit around Christmas/New Year but since then has just gone completely backwards, especially since Beto has been having a much greater impact since starting more regularly. If he doesnt have the heart to get himself up for a game like today then when will he ever? Beto for all his faults will never let the defenders have an easy game and at least tries to do the stuff he isn't good at. Barry just has none of that mentality, he has a go for something but it always just feels half hearted or woe is me if it doesn't go well.
