2025/26 Thierno Barry

Tall, cumbersome, lacks instinct isn’t clinical. What something that shouldn’t be pursued seems to be a requisite in our recruitment policy since Lukaku left. That or the typical “he will have to do” types we are so guilty of with the likes Broja and the Crowning Turd in the water pipe from Brighton especially added to the mix.

We all want the lad to do well and be a success but you have to be honest as well. Personally im not seeing why he was signed in the first place. I wasn’t enamoured with what I saw from when he was at Villarreal either.

Hope he turns it around and is brilliant in the long run but a decent forward has to be a priority along with right and left back.

….i don’t know the answer to this but are many PL teams playing with a regular striker from their Academy?

I suppose you could ask is Barry better than Ellis Simms who was produced by us but we moved him on.
Barry is in now not better than Simms. Simms was sold cos we needed the money too though.

If our never-ending list of strikers who have absolutely zero ability to put the ball in the net isn't the real problem I shudder to think what is...
They are definitely the problem, as it affects every other player on the pitch. Imagine being Ndiaye or Grealish and you go out there knowing that it’s on you too score because you know your striker can’t score. Imagine beings Tarkowski knowing if the other team score you lose because you have no goals on the team.

I wonder if someone just looked at his stats and thought "not bad" for a young-ish player with about 120 games to his name. Scored some goals at every level he's played at... whilst ignoring those levels contained the Swiss league and lower tier France and Belgium.

Ultimately no top striker was willing to come here, we all know our scouting/recruitment has been a joke for years, this guy was getable for a low-ish price and wanted to come, and it was all just as simple as that. Another garbage striker signed up for the forseeable future.

Yeah I get what you're saying but we could have the best full backs in the world and it would only count for so much if the lads whose job it is to put the ball in the net couldn't hit water if they fell out a boat.
We do need the strikers to do better, I'm not disagreeing with that. But at least in the case of Barry I think we could be seeing more from him if other issues in the team were addressed.

Atm we're still a team that creates 1 clean cut chance for the striker in each match, and if they don't score that chance we're screwed. People seem to expect that we are going to sign a striker who puts that 1 chance away every week, and I think that's highly unlikely tbh.

We need to be creating higher quality chances. Imo we do that by having fullbacks playing high, drawing opposition players wide and creating space in the box.

Never in a million years was Simms a Premier League player. Lad was pottering about in the Scottish Pub League before Dyche recalled him to make about two appearances in the second half of the season. Scoring a few goals in the Championship isn't really a barometer of anything Prem-related, no matter how low the bar is because of past and present striker options. If Simms wasn't "one of our own" no one would be giving him a thought.

The problem is the manager made it clear in the summer it was difficult to sign some of the players he wanted because of no European football and we have had consistent relegation battles.

I don’t think we will be in any relegation trouble this year , however we do risk a repeat of last summer in terms of attracting some players if we don’t show any clear progress by the time the season is over. A European spot or heaven forbid we won the FA Cup.

A tedious circle really. And our recruitment record isnt exactly one to be admired either.

It’s why I get so bored of the “meh it’s fine” or the “whatever “ attitude. What’s the point if we just exist, they are all getting paid anyway.

We will need to attract a manager who can attract players beyond these borders. David Moyes might be a good man to get a broken local talent like Jack Grealish back on track, but he's got little name recognition abroad. We need to maximise our attractiveness. Stolid stability doesn't really scream excitement...

Given how our last cup game went and was treated, wouldn't surprise me if we crash out at the first attempt, Moyes will shrug his shoulders, say no biggie, and not give it a second thought because there's an all-important Prem game up next in the race for 10th.

Rondon didn't cost us 27m...

I don’t disagree as such but I think this goes beyond just the manager, i think our recruitment and culture has been an issue for a substantial time.

A players career is short. There are exceptions but how many players who substantially improve us , beyond any financial considerations, sign for a club that shrugs its shoulders at defeats with a constant “move on whatever” attitude and seemingly isnt the slightest bit arsed going out of competitions in a place that has had no success for three decades.

People say things like “a bad day at the office” or “we move on” as if we have had it so good for years on end. It’s been like this for years and nothing changes. And whilst I don’t suggest losing your rag all the time, it’s supposed to be a competition to win and the only ones who benefit are those being paid not to deliver anything but disappointment.

Oh, I agree. But that culture changes if you hire a Carlo Ancelotti and you back him year on year - not just for a few weeks when he arrives with James. I mean, we actually gave him Abdoulaye Doucoure that month as well... Like giving Alain Prost a Morris Minor.
