In 1983 I was 47. Like many of those who increased the Conservative majority, I remembered the drastic years of the the Labour government in the 70's. The economy got better, couldn't have got worse. Your comment on the Falklands war and servicemen being burnt alive does not do you credit.

Falklands war was a massive factor in that election imo. The whole Simon Weston story on TV week after week was the reference point to the Servicemen. Sorry if you think it does me no credit, but sadly, the images were on the 6 0'Clock news days after day after day.

100 seats is a big shift, that is a fact. Don't know what more to say. Labour were unelectable.
you realise that you described 'seat shifts' as the reason you are right about Thatcher, but also claim Blair to be the worst PM of all time. You are absolutely all over the place with your arguments, and frankly have took a needlessly arrogant tone with more than a few posters

Get em

As bad as Teresa May has been, she hasn't led the country into any foreign wars on false pretences. It has to be Tony Blair.

I know it's not the question asked, but the best of those listed is Clement Atlee by a country mile.

Good shout that Toffee Tim. Always felt that he did not get the credit he deserved taking on a bust country at the end of the war. He was voted out just when things were about to improve. Conservative took the credit for the improvement but a lot of the groundwork was done by the Labour Government.

Thatcher. She undoubtedly improved the economy but at an entirely unacceptable human cost. She had no understanding beyond "if you're not for us,you're against us." Trump like combativeness but all the more frightening for being intelligent and thoughtful. I don't think the country has ever recovered from her premiership.
What's so wrong 'bout peace, love and understanding?

Thatcher for me.

It's fine being principled, even for a Conservative, but she was spiteful, dogmatic, and heartless.

Post 1945, all governments followed a general consensus, supporting a mixed economy, whilst adhering to the ethos of the Beveridge report.

Thatcher designed and oversaw the destruction of industries and communities, largely in the North, and you had to have lived through it, especially in Liverpool, to understand the structural and human damage.

May she rot in hell.

Sorry, digressing from thread slightly. Leonard's post and mention of Liverpool just reminded me. In 1983 I was involved in a deal with Mersey Docks & Harbour Board. We travelled up to Liverpool and met in their impressive building at the Pier Head. The deal was to buy all the MDHB dock equipment such as Lift Trucks, Cranes etc., and lease it back to them. In our team, I was organising all the financing and we had some engineers who wanted to look at the equipment. We were buying at book value. There was a dock strike on at the time and I said did that mean we wouldn't be able to inspect the equipment. 'Why not' said the MDHB guy.
'We won't be able to get past the pickets will we' I said. The MDHB team burst out laughing. 'There are no pickets' they said 'not needed, one out all out'. We had a free run at the docks, didn't see another soul!
Just as an aside, on my way home, I called at my old school in Richard Kelly Drive. First visit since I left in 1951. It was a Thursday and the Headmaster told me that the school was closing for good the very next day. How weird is that?

Atlee's a bit over-rated isn't he? The welfare state was devised by Beveridge (a Liberal), and was supported by the Tories (who had the creation of the NHS in their manifesto as well). Labour won that election and implemented it, but it was very much in keeping with cross party opinion back then.
