The UK in the EU

Tubey, Austria is a net spender, check your facts, you sound badly Gerrard. Also you should scale these numbers by population, GDP, cost of living and median income to see how they affect a net paying country if you want to feel supremacy about who pays the most.

I agree with EU transfering funds from the richer nations to the poorer ones to spur growth and stability so that the area as a whole can prosper. I feel like the EU did expand too fast and didn't regulate itself properly with the big nations UK included being the main culprits.

I think Delooded had a pretty good pros and cons post.

Well that has worked out well.

What, and that is down to the EU? Not the general improvement and maturity of democracies in the region, (the same democracies that the the EU is currently dismantling; Greece, Spain, Italy, Ireland). Oh, and let us not forget the EUs brilliant handling of the break up of Yugoslavia, and the ethnic cleansing that took place on their doorstep, which they did NOTHING about until NATO/UK/US actually had the balls to get some boots on the ground.

It was the first thought when the European Coal and Steel Community was founded: To prevent Europe from future wars. And yes, Greece, Spain and other nations are in big trouble, but did the EU cause it or the economic crisis? I'm not well infomed about the EU's position in the Yugoslavian war, can't say much about that.

Climate change??? Do not make me actually split my sides pi**ing myself! EU make us have sh**e light bulbs, and crap wind farms, whilst trying to get China to buy our steel/copper/concrete etc etc so they can build 10 cities a year and 10000 miles of motorways. Really feckin "green"!!

Well maybe that was a bad example. But a united Europe has much more power in global questions than single states have, especially when there are nations like USA, China or Russia to debate with. The problem is that the EU members have to find an agreement before, which takes time.

Not a sceptic mate, a realist. If you let these idiots pretend the success of their project is based on "no war for 60 years", then they have well and truly fooled you pal.

I still believe the way forward is a united Europe.

Yes, as a TRADING block, not a political union. Dig out some history books mate, and see what has happened in Europe when a proud nation feels it has been wronged by an outside influence. Germany 1936 is a good starting point.

Oh, and while you are at it, check out why the USA worked as a political union of disparate states 200 years ago. Single currency, with political union. THAT is what we/you are heading for.

It won't come that far. Too many languages, cultures, politicians and different economic standards. I don't want all politics decided by the EU, just some things. For example a united crime prevention or the recognition of degrees abroad.

The reason people in the UK are so hostile towards the EU is they see billions of their tax money being sent to an undemocratic, bloated, wasteful superstate and they don't see the benefits.

Does anybody recognise these people? And more importantly, does anybody recall voting for them?

They're 3 of the most powerful people in Europe, and not one of them was elected by the people of Europe.
Herman Van Rompuy, José Manuel Barroso & Catherine Ashton.
Job descriptions for all 3 vague at best.
Oh! Ashton is British and still didn't get anybody's vote

Free trade - yes
Free movement of people - yes
Everything else - no thanks

It's hard for the EU to say they exist to help poorer nations when the Common Agricultural Policy probably does as much as any official global policy to impoverish poor nations, not to mention being a stark contrast to the principles of free trade.

Why is free movement of people good?

Its why we get Boris from ****ing lithuania or wherever selling jarg coke and copying old ladies credit cards so he can save up enough money and then move back to be king of whatever ****hole village he came from ffs.

This. It's alright between us and say France, Italy, etc, but when you've got free movement between Romania and the UK... nah mate.

If people have a job to come to and can support themselves then I couldn't care less where they come from. Talent is what matters, not what nationality it says on someones passport.

I'm not in favour of the workshy, regardless of which country they're from. But the smart and the industrious are always welcome imo.

Yeah, your not racist Nik, honest. ;)

The financial benefits of free movement to the UK is wide ranging and well-documented. All we need is the freedom to generally restrict free movement when it becomes too much of a burden rather than an asset to our economy.

But naturally you're going to pigeonhole them all as drug-pushing gangster terrorists directly from the movie Taken. ^^

Let's be honest, letting eastern europe have free reign causes a lot more problems than say somewhere like france.
