The UFC and Mixed Martial Arts Thread

I tend to agree that it's getting a bit stale. I used to watch it religiously along with Bamma/Strikeforce/Dream and Bellator when I could get it. Now, with all the old legends retiring my interest is waning.

There just doesn't seem to be the characters in the sport like there used to be. Will always tune in for Wanderlei/Shogun/Nog/Anderson etc, and have a soft spot for Joe Lauzon, but all my other favourites have retired or are on the verge.

Did you ever watch YAMMA?

I'll be honest, I found the idea to be intruiging but never got a chance to see it (Instead of having an Octagon they had the "YAMMA Pit" which was a ring with a slope up the walls which sounded like an interesting gimmick if nothing else)

The UFC will never be better than when it started. The intrigue of finally being able to watch a karate fella fight a boxer and stuff like that was boss.

It's worse off for being MMA now IMO.

It had to do that though to become a legitimate sport at the end of the day

I don't think UFC would still be around today if they hadn't done what they have. They would have gone out of business or would have been closed down by the sports commisions

You do still get the odd style battle now and then as well

My only worry is that it would be a bit one sided in favour of Silva

At the end of the day, Silva is much bigger and that will be the deciding factor I think

It's a shame because if it was based purely on skill, I reckon it would be a close fight

Thing is, if GSP stays out of range and avoids the clinch he's better at everything else.

I respectfully disagree, at least MMA has some rules in place now.

My favourite fighter ever was Chuck, remember watching him fighting Pele in Brazil, Brutal.

Favourite fighters ever?

1. Penn

2. Jones (as a fighter, bell end of a man IMO)

3. Silva (bit of a tit sometimes as well e.g. Maia fight)

4. GSP when he's not being a bore

5. Rutten

The problem is it could never stay the same, it was always going to end up mixed Martial arts. There is only so long a boxer or kick boxer wil be taken down and submitted before they think I need to get better on the floor or at least stuffing the takedown. Because of all the arts involved it was always going to be a progressive sport.

Maybe not submissions off his back, but he's better at takedowns, throws, position control, ground striking, submission defence (maybe), submissions (maybe) and executing a game plan.

I would say Anderson has the advantage with, everywhere standing he dictates, clinch, he'll control distance better, ground strike I would give to Anderson even off his back, Subs as well.

GSP would have to control him on the ground for 5 rounds I would feel which I wouldn't be surprised with as he's an awesome technician and athlete, I just feel Anderson beats him everywhere else.

Jones is going to be the best ever but hes a massive bell IMO.
