The Thomas Gravesen Appreciation Thread

Turned up for 1 game in 5, I still convinced that Real really wanted Carsley but mixed them up.

Just don't get that at all. Carsley was a very limited stopper. Never a Madrid player in a million years. Gravesen was on a different level altogether in terms of ability, technique, passing, creativity.
People really think the biggest club in the world would make a mistake like that. Amazing.

Ohh, so that's why Real played him in exactly that role then.

Ok mate if you think it's more plausible that one of the top scouting systems in world football couldn't identify 2 well known premier league players, then you go with that.
I will, much more fun when you do that.

Also (nods to Casablanca)...Of all the midfielders in all the world, they picked Tommy.

So why did they buy him, play him in that role, drop him and shift him on as soon as they could.
Wiki I know, but still...
'Gravesen was signed to fill a hole in Madrid's defensive midfield, a position somewhat different from his time at Everton...'
Throw in some Occams razor
hey presto

I remember watching him play for us in pre-season game at goodison the season we signed him. It was the first time I'd ever seen him play and I can remember thinking three things

1) He is never 24
2) He'd boss
3) Actually, hes gash

( repeat steps 2 & 3 for the next 3 years)

Used to love listening to his hybrid accent when doing interviews.
A 50/50 split of Scandinavian and Scouse sounds.
Thought it was really funny for some reason.

His assist for Marcus Bent's winner in 2004/05 against Man City was genius. I remember being in the Family Enclosure with my Dad down that end and thought for all the world he was going to belt it but he disguised the chip brilliantly and put it on a plate for Bent. He was incredible that night and also away at Palace that season. He was at the very least a very gifted footballer.

We probably wouldn't have even finished in the top 8 without him that season, never mind top 4. You wonder what might have been had he stayed.

Training ground bust-up with Arteta in February and season derailed most likely.

Fond memories of the Grav - talented player at a time when we weren't blessed with much, it was slim pickings. Appearance was 100% misleading, in that he looked like a no-compromise, defensive hard man from the far north. Actually played like a mercurial Spaniard, beautiful skills but depressed about the weather.

Big personality probably helped us a lot but he was nowhere near a real hard man or even a pretend one, tbh - just seemed an act he enjoyed playing. His mate and fellow slaphead in centre mid for Denmark, Stig Tofting, was pretty hard. Played the way he looked.
