The Olympic Stadium - the more I see of it, the more I dont like it. It looks like what it is: a shell designed to be broken apart. And the interior with the absence of high walls between track and spectators means there's no definition between the athletes and crowd and the tv coverage 'loses' races as it all merges into one scene. (I think that's why some of the tv angles have been close ups as the races unfold...something usually reserved for post-race analysis).

All I can say Davek is that the stadium is a triumph of simplicity, tremendous ease of access, all facilities on the exterior of the stadium, and beautiful sight lines for all spectators. Also tremendous atmosphere for an open bowl only partially covered by a roof.

However I don't think it would be a great football stadium because of the running track and area around it.

Hope you enjoyed it there mate. I haven't been lucky enough to go but friends and family have been to a lot of the venues athletics, swimming , handball , boxing and hockey and universally they have been nothing but impressed by the design , facilities and the overall 'Olympic package'

From a spectator's view looking on from the stands it's a vastly different experience. Have you been able to catch the tv coverage yet? I have to say it's pretty poor.

There was a documentary about the stadium-build on tv before the Games began and it underlined that space was having to be maximised because of the Olympic site being boxed in (they miscalculated the room they had for everything, basically). That meant no high wall perimeter to the track at ther stadium. It makes a massive difference, IMO. It also meant a lot of facilities like catering and merchandising had to be pulled from the build plans and the base of the stadium narrowed (again. to fit it onto the footprint they could afford to have).

To be fair though Dave, the tv coverage full stop has been pretty poor. That's down to the IOC more than anyone.

Yes, it has been. As you know, that road cycle schedule was a complete joke. We found out Cancellara was out of the RR about fiveminutes after he crashed!!

Cannot believe there was a British guy (could tell by the flag/shirt) at the basketball cheering for Russia over Australia. I could understand if it was Rwanda or something... But Russia, seriously?

It depends on how success is measured. If the total number of medals won is the metric used, the United States is the most successful by far with a total of 2,299 medals since 1896. This is certainly an accomplishment of which the US and its athletes should be proud. However, it does not exactly seem right to praise the U.S. for winning more medals than a country like Norway that’s 60 times smaller. The U.S. is relatively large, so a fairer comparison might examine the total medals won per capita. The following graphic reports the top 10 recipients on a per capita basis, as well as the bottom 10 recipients and compare them to the United States.
