We got a Bendix washing machine about 1963 which shook violently as it went through its cycle. The cat took to sitting on top. I was always worried in case his brain got addled.

No farthings were minted after 1956...officially recognising the fact that in the public's eyes inflation had made the coin redundant.
There were plenty of documented cases in the late 40s, early 50s of bus conductors, newpaper sellers, refusing 8 or 6 farthings for a fare or paper.
It ceased to be legal tender on 1st Jan 1961
