The Oldies Thread

You're too young for this thread. You need to have purchased 4 blackjacks or fruit salads for 1/2d to qualify.
I'm glad you said that, my missus doesn't believe you got 4 for ha'penny, as she only ever got 2. Beginning to doubt my memory.

Then again she is 5 years younger than me.

No farthings were minted after 1956...officially recognising the fact that in the public's eyes inflation had made the coin redundant.
There were plenty of documented cases in the late 40s, early 50s of bus conductors, newpaper sellers, refusing 8 or 6 farthings for a fare or paper.
It ceased to be legal tender on 1st Jan 1961
Just sayin like

Even now, every time I see a wren in the garden it reminds me of the farthing.

Buying 2 Park Drive or Woodbine, or even a single, in your school uniform at the paper shop....fella used to split a packet of 10 to sell to us kids.

Parents putting those little barrel locks on the first dial-up phone in the house so you couldn't use it when they were out. We'd open it with a hair grip then make ourselves scarce when the bill came in.

Spot the Ball....my old man won around £700.00 in about 1970 - it built us an extension with an inside toilet.
Ah yes. Buying loose cigs.
Armed with a threepenny joey, going to the shop my mam never went to, buying a twopenny loose and a penny bubbly.
The chewy to take away the smell of tobacco on your breath.
I now know that with both my mam and dad being smokers at the time, they wouldn't have been able to tell.

As a child of the late 70's early 80's I remember

Quattro (Soft Drink)
Texan Bars (chocolate)
Mojo's (chew sweets)
Jubblys (ice pops)
Candy Cigarettes
