Christ I got one of those for my 16 th birthday
I used to love playing and recording the top 20 on Sun at 6 pm
I wanted to take it with me when I got married 6 yrs later
My mam wouldn’t let me , she said it would leave a mark on the carpet and she couldn’t afford to replace it

Need some advice lads.. Bought one of the Mrs' chrimbo prezzies today, was over £100 off at Argos ( not to be sniffed at ! ).. The thing is, you know when your waiting at Argos, when the girls are bringing out the boxes etc.. The girl bought out this f*cking massive box, thats never mine like I thought.. and ffs it was. Its a full boot of the car job.
Its worth more that my bloody car already and I dont fancy driving round with it in my boot for a month !

Lads... Any ( sensible ) ideas would be very gratefully recieved !

Yes it was a rugby school - no football teams whatsoever. A bit of a shock at first, as I had played football all through junior school for St. John's (in Kirkdale), playing one year above my age group - I was playing for the first year senior team when in the last year of juniors.

For 3 years I did cross-country running, then at the start of fourth year in CAGS Pat Quinn told me I was transferring to the rugby team, so I spent the remaining four years at CAGS playing scrum half. In the last year at school I also played for Brunswick (Bootle) Under 18s. So, I played 80 minutes rugby on a Saturday morning, went home, got fed, then headed out to play 90 minutes football for Brunswick in the afternoon. That Brunswick team had some very good players. A couple played regularly for Everton 'A', the goalkeeper was the Lancashire Under-18s 'keeper and a couple of others also played for Lancashire U-18s. Centre forward was Joe King, who later played for Marine, and had a lucrative deal set up to play in the emerging football league in America before he suffered a double leg break with Marine which scuppered his chances of playing in the States. That Brunswick team I played in got to 2 finals that season. BUT, they were on consecutive nights. The County FA Minor Cup Final was on one night, and the LBA Final was on the following night. We asked the Country FA to move the date, but they wouldn't. So our Manager, Ted Caroll, says to us in the dressing room at the Police Ground before the Minor Cup Final, 'Whatever you do, don't go to extra time'. Full-time score: 3-3. Lost 4-3 after extra time to Norris Green Boys Club that night. The following night we lost to Belvidere Boys Club 2-1. The most famous player from the Brunswick youth team over the years is Carragher.

The first well-known player to come out of CAGS was Colin Harvey. In later years, when its name had changed to Cardinal Heenan, Stevie G went there.

Cardinal Heenan still have one of the best school footy teams in the city mate, packed full of Academy kids.

My lads school team recently got a proper spanking off them.

I bought one of them years ago for 50p as it fitted the space i had in the shed and i could use the lid thingy as a bench top.
When i got it home i found not only was it in full working order - including a diamond stylus (essential with vinyl) it had a load of ace 78s in that record holder thing... Ella, Nat, Frank, Dorsey, Miller, etc

I was at Merchant Taylors 1952-57...hated it apart from the sports coaching, which was by assorted rugby internationals, county players and test cricketers!. Rugby coaches were a Welsh international lock and a Welsh International wing...I was in the same year as Richie Greenwood, who captained England(father of Will Greenwood). Most school first XV players went on to Waterloo in those days, they were a strong side.Another contemporary, Jimmy Saunders, joined South Liverpool football(Holly Park?) the moment he left school. I played football(not very well!) for Silcocks in the Shipping League, in a forward line that included Sammy Leach, who ,if you know your Merseybeat history....etc. etc. Sammy was a good player who had a trial for the RS. We also had a 'veteran' player in his 50s, Scot named George Forrest who had played in the Scottish League.Class above the rest of us.
Cricket coach was Leary Constantine(West Indies) and various county players. I kept playing club cricket until I was 60!
Re Silcocks...there must be some old players out there....lots of us were Evertonians! I remember we were drawn against Everton 'B' who were all about 14 years old, in the Liverpool Junior Cup,or similar...it was a Saturday afternoon after we had been on a 'tour' of Threlfalls Brewery in the morning. We murdered Everton 'B' for ten minutes and led 2-0. Final score was 14-2 to them.;)
Some other Silcocks football names, who may be out there, but pretty old now....Don McKenna(lived by the Abbey) John McParland,Keith Mears,Albert Howard from Maghull(mate of Tony Kay) .Those were the days!.

...I seem to recall Mike Siemen being a rugby coach at Merchant Taylor’s. After your time, Steve.

Yes . They always had top class sports coaches....Farrell for athletics, etc. Mind you in the 50s when I was there they were still quite elitist. Daffodil button holes in the Lent term and all that stuff. Straw boaters and all!! Did me more harm than good!!

....it was certainly a grand school, very elitist. Never been inside it to play footy, nearest I got was a few games (and goals) at Marine. I presume you originate from up that way?
