The Oldies Thread

A laser beam - also did you notice they had the same number of winners every week - to get the centre of the ball it had to be a pin of an X in the middle of the ball - I had an Aunt who got 2nd prize £500 back then big money in those days ....
I won a £500 second prize in 1984. Our first born was a few months old, Mrs Whittle had stopped work to look after him and we were on beam end financially. That win was a godsend.

….great story.

i’ve mentioned Cardinal Heenan many times on here, not least because of its considerable contribution to professional football. I live very close and my own son went there, back in my own school days it was called Cardinal Allen and known more for rugby. I played for Liverpool Schoolboys and as a 14yo we played their 6th form and that was a physical challenge I still distinctly remember 🫣
I read the other day that Gerrard went there because one of his primary school teachers who was married to Eric Chadwick, head of PE at CH, recommended it due its football reputation. Eric, who was a top bloke, was talented at golf, football and cricket. I remember once playing a cricket match for CH teachers against another school (20 overs a side before it was Twenty20). The other team needed 3 off the last over and Eric bowled his off breaks to give away just 3 runs and earn us a draw. It felt like a win.

FFS, I've just googled Eric and found out that he died in 2019. He got cremated on 30 May. It was, coincidentally, Gerrard's 39th birthday.

….the Kennedy Assassination was certainly a ‘where were you moment’ because I remember it to this day. I’d have just turned 7 in Nov ‘63 and I was in the entry between behind Lytton St, Everton, where my Mum was talking to a neighbour about it;

Right there with you in a way Mr Eggs... I was only 4 when it happened and don't remember the day itself, but it instantly takes me back to Hoylake Rd in Birkenhead, a sweet shop called Lowdon's I think, My mum had me reciting the events to the lady behind the counter - I clearly had not only memorised the names but also understood the significance. I hadn't started infant school yet. suprising I grew up to be so stupid really!

I was 7 too. Sitting on my dad's lap in my jimjams when the news came through.

I thought this might interest you @Eggs

….cheers I’ll definitely pop in, it’s great to see all of those pictures adorning the walls. They used to be in the dressing room at Penny Lane but the last time I saw me on one was at Walton Hall Pk, not sure if that still their HQ. My son got me this quite recently, pleased to say I do get a mention. Happy times;

We used to be bussed from Sefton Park school to Grove Mount for our games lessons, sometimes we had to play on the shale pitch. It was also the home ground for the school’s football team , I used to go and watch when I was in the fourth year.

….think Cliff Marshall went there. Weirdly, I picked up my city team photograph from your school. If I remember rightly one of the teachers there (Mr Sutcliffe) was Secretary of the Schoolboys FA.

Remember that shail pitch, sessions of kicking the ball from one touchline to the other.
