Remember when it was impossible to buy a colour TV - People used to stand outside & watch tv programmes - always on the rental in most families - we had one were you put coins in & the rental guy would call to empty the box on the TV take the rent & give you the excess back - sounded good , but it was disastrous if the box filled before he was due = no TV to watch -

….rented our first Colour telly for Sunderland v Leeds FA Cup Final.

Never had coin slots, Ernie Carr had a shop on Boaler St (behind the Grafton) and came to the house weekly to collect the TV rent. Thinking of it, he must’ve been loaded.
