….on this day in 1940 one of the worst tragedies of the war happened in Durning Road, Wavertree. My father-in-law (now dead) mentioned it to me some years ago when we drove past but I came across this;

HSBC announce that it is to close 114 branches nationwide.

Us oldies, who find online banking scary, are in deep trouble.

Going to miss drawing out £100 in sausage and mash, and then hitting town for the afternoon.

Yes I still like cash, it will be the fourth HSBC closing within a 2 mile radius of where I live.

When we moved into the village we live in thirty two years ago there were five “banks”, Barclays, Midland, Nat West, Lloyds and TSB. Since then the village has more than doubled in size in population, has a by pass which now needs another by pass, and three primary schools! Guess how many banks we have - none!
The buildings that did house the Nat West and Lloyds have both been stood empty for over three years!
