There were 5 adults in our house and all smoked, add to that Lead water pipes and an outside bog...wimps nowadays, go into toxic shock if they're in the same room as a packet of peanuts - or a requirement to do a decent days work. After sitting on the upstairs of the 19 bus into town as a kid, amazed I've made it to mature adulthood.
Everyone smoking Woodbines and Capstan Full strength, and all the windows closed.
Talk about passive smoking, more like a laboratory beadle.
Same mate, either the 19 or the F9, would get wet feet if it rained the top deck would be like a bath after 40 minutesAfter sitting on the upstairs of the 19 bus into town as a kid, amazed I've made it to mature adulthood.

I used to get in the Civil Service, as a perk, luncheon vouchers - 15 pence a day. Used to work flexitime, two hour liquid lunches and little done in the afternoon. No wonder the country was going to the dogs.In the public sector, you worked a Bank Holiday and not only did you get double time, but you got the day back in lieu.
I don't think that happens anymore.
Slowly but surely every perk seemed to be eroded under the guise of " if you don't like it, there's plenty out there that want your job ".

its time and a turd on most councils now! for whatever day you work on overtime! In the public sector, you worked a Bank Holiday and not only did you get double time, but you got the day back in lieu.

In a similar vein, as sixteen year olds we had been to our school speech night at Birkenhead Technical College. My first pint in a bar 1p cheaper than the lounge was 14p in 1971 for a pint of bitter, there was about 12 of us in a small bar all under age the owner barman (glad for the influx of trade asked where are you lot from) when our smallest member of the group piped up from the back we are from the new under 18 team up the road - he smiled and carried on pulling the pints lollol
I went to town at the age of 16 and the barmaid refused to serve me who was getting a round in for about six of us - I aregued my birthdate the lot - she quietly whispered sod of quick there's a police raid any minute! In a similar vein, as sixteen year olds we had been to our school speech night at Birkenhead Technical College.
A good few of us walked up to a pub on Oxton Road where it was reckoned you would get served if you looked the part.
We were all big lads and we asked for our drinks individually. We all got served except for one of us who was chucked out for being under age. the reason he was refused service was he still had his school cap on.
Wasn't there a F1 car on the ceiling or had I been drinking too many brown mixed.I went to town at the age of 16 and the barmaid refused to serve me who was getting a round in for about six of us - I aregued my birthdate the lot - she quietly whispered sod of quick there's a police raid any minute!
We sulked with me getting stick from my mates for being too baby faced etc - then a black butchers van schree he'd up and loads of young lads got thrown in under age drinkers - we cleared off to the Sportsman in those days relived!lol
Maybe your right in the sportsman - it was always crowded - beer was so dear - a good watering hole to head on to the Top Rank club/disco ballroomWasn't there a F1 car on the ceiling or had I been drinking too many brown mixed.
Sportsman was the last pub on our circuit before we went for the tunnel bus. If my memory serves me correct I think it had not exactly a late opening license, but an extended opening past the normal pub hours.Maybe your right in the sportsman - it was always crowded - beer was so dear - a good watering hole to head on to the Top Rank club/disco ballroom
Taxi home etc!
Was the sportsman the one in st John's precinct?Wasn't there a F1 car on the ceiling or had I been drinking too many brown mixed.
