Current Affairs The next Tory (strong and stable) leader is Boris Johnson

We can no longer blame Brussels. This is perhaps the most important point of all. If we left the EU, we would end this sterile debate, and we would have to recognise that most of our problems are not caused by “Bwussels”, but by chronic British short-termism, inadequate management, sloth, low skills, a culture of easy gratification and under-investment in both human and physical capital and infrastructure.

So now they plan to run roughshod over convention and stand a candidate to oppose Bercow, because, they say, they want someone impartial in the role. Yeah right.
About the only thing i agree with them on the man is a discrace to the role.
So one sided and has broke convention to suit himself on a number of occassions so can hardly complain when its done to him now.
Along with that tit who shouts no brexit outside if parliment , that horrible tory toad with the french name that pops up talking about the war, i will be glad to see the back of when all this is finally over with.

I'm happy to be wrong on this, but my impression was that he was largely on the side of parliament rather than any particular leave/remain side. The problem is that the government have tried to push through Brexit and run roughshod over parliament numerous times, which is where he has pushed back, which may create the impression that he's a remain advocate, but is he really? (agree with you on the no Brexit bloke though - strange man).

I think he is a remain advocate, to be honest Bruce , likes of letting opposition parties set the buisness of the house ect , getting away from the leave /stay argument it sets a presedent for yet more mess in parliment in the future and we have had enough of that lately.
His grandstanding is not really suitable for the role of ref either , needs to go
While he is there there will always be the impression that the house is biased on one side.
Not good going forward no matter what the outcome is in the next few monthes.
Back on topic wonder what Boris will cock up today.

Did anyone see 'Rise of the Nazis' on BBC2 last Friday? (2nd part tonight).

It was pretty good. It showed how geo-political turmoil had the effect of facilitating the rise of populists like Hitler (but not only him) as the German Establishment sought to contain a developing mess. Basically, there was a belief that anti-democratic forces on the right could be used and controlled to restore balance again. Obvioulsy they couldn't and the rest is history.

I'm not making the case of seeing Johnson in such a light, but he does legitimise a lot of the far right extremism that have attached themselves to his campaign. These people are a fraction away from becoming paramilitary, and they already have a lot of ex-servicemen in their ranks.

We need to be vigilant with this lot. It's not a given that we can maintain our parliamentary democracy when it's already been undermined by an Establishment party...or rather a dangerously out of control wing of that party.

Yeah I recently had a "discussion" with someone who said it couldn't happen here because we had a "free press".

He was a Daily Mail reader. He didn't appreciate me pointing out the irony.
