The UK receives around 3 times less asylum applications than comparable European countries (France, Germany, Spain), and in fact per head of population we're way down the table.

'People' are being wound up by bullshit.

You say you want people to come here and contribute, its been proven time and time again that both EU migrants and refugees have a net positive economic impact on the UK.

You say you want 'the best people', what does that mean? Taking out the fact that its a basic moral and humanitarian duty to help the globally displaced, my partner works in getting people into jobs who've been medium to long term unemployed for all kinds of reasons - ex-cons, abused spouses, people with serious mental health problems, refugees and asylum seekers, and it has to be said, a decent wedge of feckless, idle Brits who just don't wanna work.
Have a wild guess at the ones she has the easiest time with, that are the most engaged, that will take any opportunity and do literally anything. She's put scientists and doctors into work as bin men and porters, and they're glad of the job.

The right wing in this country, political and media, vilify refugees, blow the problem out of all proportion and provide no mechanisms to actually have safe, accountable and efficient immigration management to cover up for their own deficient governance.

Well firstly, the idea that someone in Whitehall gets to decide who or what is "best" is an utter nonsense. I somehow suspect you would object to a centrally planned economy and yet mandate a centrally planned workforce.

Secondly, your comments on refugees strip any kind of agency from the people themselves, who may have many reasons they would rather come to the UK than to France, Poland, or wherever. International law supports that agency because its not only humane but also gives those people the best chance of making a success in their new life. For some reason, you want to do what is both impractical and inhumane. Only you know the reasons why.
