Obviously, he didn't listen any more than Nixon and Trump did, when it comes to "yes" men and women. Machiavelli argues fairly persuasively from qualitative evidence that you're better off not entering politics at all, if you plan to do things that way.

Of course, that was also written in an era where failure as a ruler had a tendency to be fatal, so there's that.
 
I still can't get my head around the separation of Johnson and his party. They are one in the same, the would be acting pretty similarly with any of his school chums in charge, although a different person might be more cunning and intelligent. His nonsense is mild compared to what his party is doing as a whole and the country will just accept it was him at fault and welcome with open arms the next public schoolboy on the conveyor belt.
