The first thing I thought was hmmm…I find it a bit too convenient that just as that Sue Gray was about to release her report the Met then decide to investigate and ask her to make “minimal reference” to her report.

You can just see it now, the Met take months to carry out their investigation then come out and give civil servants a slap on the wrist and clear Boris of any wrongdoing.

This really. It also stops Starmer from repeatedly raising the issue at PMQ’s and conjecture within the media….

All we’re going to hear from Boris and his cronies now is them saying “wait for the Met to release their report in 3 years time”
They won't.

The Met and government have engineered this so that they didn't investigate when they should, Sue Gray's report became the thing to wait for 'warts and all', then at the point it looked damaging, the met chip in and make it a police matter.

They can diminish the Gray report, Tories can proclaim innocence, while saying we need to wait for the Met. The Met delay then quietly drop it at a later point, wherein Tories declare innocence again.

"Let's get on with important stuff".

Met police leadership and this government are not fit for purpose.

I am not sure that is the case TBH; there are alternative theories that would explain this request (for example if Gray has found evidence of something taking place that was actually criminal, not just against COVID regulations).

Reading the news today, not just me that thought this don't mention anything we are investigating was a little off.

If the police would actively show political bias, is that not a major concern?

I just don't get why there is so much defence over this. Someone please enlighten me on the subject. Unless this whole thing is directly corrupted akin to a terrible movie then why so much cover up? Why save Johnson to this extent?

Doesn't the country need a better leader? To actually lead us? If the government want to get rid of something completely damning of the government then does that not raise the question of the government itself?

Would it not have been better to force Johnson onto his sword and move on? Rather than create a scenario that looks dodgy as hell but nobody will do anything about?

Parties were actually criminal. Covid regulations were not Covid regulations at the time they were laws. Police across the country have been heavy handed with respect to enforcement and been lauded for it by this Government.

See "protests" and vigils, etc....

and more importantly, the Met initially refused to investigate.

The position they find themselves in is that they won't investigate until someone else has found the evidence already, and then they now insist it is a police matter and must remain unpublished.

Again, I don’t mean breaching COVID regulations, I mean actually criminal (as in arrest, interview, charge, court appearance and trial possibly).

That's the legacy really. Further erosion of constitutional norms, further distrust of police and law enforcement, further checks and balances on executive power all in aid of keeping jobs.
