Been speaking to several people this week who have never had dealings with the benefits system up until now. They cannot believe what they are being asked to live on. The whole system was designed as a safety net, but years of Tory rags creating folk devils out of benefit claimants has made it an easy target for cutting spending. We are soon going to see just how damaging that has been.
[USER=31886]@Charlie Sweet ‘s assertion that years of austerity has been a good thing is so wide of the mark it’s unreal.

I'm saying if there hadn't have been that spending curb then we'd have no chance now of affording what's needed for this virus. I did go on to say I didnt like a lot of what the Tories did during that decade but the principle of reigning in spending is now a good thing in hindsight.

It's not conjecture on MY part. It is the considered assessment of many clinical experts.

"Fortunate to have had austerity".

FFS, get a grip.

Many clinical experts? Unless you know otherwise the government is following the country's scientific and medical advisers?

As I said in that post I disagree with loads of things the Tories did in that decade and have posted on here to that effect. What I'm saying is the general idea of belt tightening was a bloody good one in hindsight.

It depends on how you view things I guess. Many economists would say that a strong economy relies on a strong welfare state. The curbs in public spending were largely useless as councils were generally having to pick up the costs elsewhere.
Austerity was a fallacy in my opinion. Others, will of course disagree. We have never recovered from the financial crash and have been papering over the cracks for the last decade. We are in a terrible position to prepare for an event such as this. This will become more apparent in the coming months.

Ask him to name two......

Downing Street said the PM would continue his recovery at his country residence, Chequers. WTF

"On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work. He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas' for the brilliant care he has received.
"All of his thoughts are with those affected by this illness." WTF

No 10 said he would head to Chequers but he made a surprise visit to Downing Street with Carrie at his side WTF she's pregnant and he's not clear of the virus

Did he ever have it?

Spin, spin, spin.

There's plenty of mugs out there who'll believe the BS positioning of this tool as a bona fide "victim".

Prediction: the week this horrendous outbreak flattens out is the week that the Butcher of Downing St fronts up a press conference again.
