"Doing a Dwight Howard" as I like to put it

The Magic shouldn't have chosen him over the Head coach, when it was obvious he was going to be off as soon as possible

Following in the footsteps of Carmelo. Those two will never win anything, unless they learn a little humility and join a team as the 3rd best player (which Dwight may already be). They're only good for a team if they go to your rival; think Fernando Torres talent with Luis Suarez charm.

It baffled me to be honest

It's like sacking Alex Ferguson to keep Nani happy, when you know Nani is off when the season ends

Good luck to Melo finding any team where he's the third best player... Unless its team USA, there's no chance.

Point being, if Melo is your best option, you're not going far. He'd be a great compliment to a star player, but if he's your team, you'll do little more than sell tickets.

*If Melo went to Houston, he could be the 2nd best (behind Harden and before Howard) and that could work. But in any case, the teams goes where Harden goes. Melo and Howard will never lead a team forward.

Heat maybe ? He'd probably be the 2nd but I'm sure there is people that would make the case for Wade > Melo.

I'll take Wade > Melo. Melo is a great shooter, but any team can add a perimeter shot if needed. You can tell me "he's a great scorer" as well, but in the end it's not about scoring points it's about rings. That's why the Wilt vs Russell conversation is interesting.

As an individual player though? Melo can do everything, post, rebound and has arguably the best jumper in the league. Wade is probably better as a team player, but that's not the discussion

That's the discussion, isn't it? Melo can do everything except: pass the ball when needed; take one for the team; put the team on his back and carry them through the playoffs; display the leadership required to win a title.

That's why I suggest he should be the 2nd (at least) or 3rd (preferably) option on a team. Larry Bird could dominate games that mattered without taking shots (listen to Boston Globe's Bob Ryan tell stories on Bird if you haven't). That's why Bird is considered a top-10 all time player. Magic could play every position on the court and learned to shoot (which he wasn't very good at doing when he came out of college) so he could play better. Those guys have rings; Melo never will, that's why I don't rate him. Good shooters are a dime a dozen, and that's all he is. He's a very, very good shooter (Rasheed Wallace) and a HOFer, but he's not an all-time great.

Disagree. Melo at this point is better than Wade. He's not good enough to win on his own and has always been stuck with really inferior teammates.

He could be the number one guy, if (like say KG) he had a very good supporting cast, or he could succeed as the number 2 guy.

But the problem for Melo is he's got the same problem Iverson had before him - everyone expects him to shoot, because he has to shoot, and he shoots, and that's the entire gameplan for his team.

Who has Melo ever had the option to pass to in crunch time? We simply don't know whether Melo is good enough to be number 1. He's never had a passable 2.

JR Smith? Broken, old Iverson?

Bird was on a team of hall of famers. Apples and oranges. Compare Jordan pre-Pippen. Compare Lebron in the Cavs days.

Both are better than Melo, sure, but it's not like one player wins you a title. Melo has never had a number 2.

Now see, those are 2 very different things. Melo is the probably the third best player in the league, and unless he joins a team with LeBron and KD, then he will never be the third best player on a team, for now at least.

3rd option on a team? Now that is different
