I think in most of the time I have watched Everton (from the 90's onwards), the mantle of being the "Number 9" has weighed heavy on the players we have had and many of them have dodged the responsibility of being the number 9, because they dont want to have to live up to the legends that have gone before them.

When you look back at the records of some of those players though and you think what a player like; Joe Royle, Graeme Sharp, Bob Latchford, etc would cost now, £40m? £60m?

Certainly more than we can afford, so we may never have another number 9 like them again, unless they come through the youth system, even then, would we be able to hang on to them?

A good point , which highlights the importance of an effective scouting system. Sharp , for example , cost 120 thousand from Dumbarton. A year later , Robson moved to Man Utd for 1.5 million , so Sharp wasn't a big money signing. Others , (Dean , Lawton) were. Spotting talent early is vitally important for us these days.
