Sure. I want to remain in the EU
- Because mankind works better when we cooperate (one among many reasons)
- Because diversity of ideas and perspectives allows us to innovate more effectively
- Because innovation is recombinative, ie it takes ideas that work in one field and applies them in another
- Because patent data shows us that, as does founder data for startups (a disproportionate number of which are migrants)
That doesn't even take into account the huge sums of money that the EU have poured into this country to support innovation in a huge number of fields, including health care, mental health, environmental management etc. The fact we will lose access to these funds could jeopardise the future ability of the country to continue to innovate.

Here you go Bruce.....

I want to leave the Eu

Why ?, because I do not like being run by Brussels - I'd say that the Government in Brussels looks far more competent than the government in Westminster.

Why ?, because I cannot change the people running the EU - You've as much chance, maybe more, than you have of changing the people who run the UK

Why ?, because I have no direct vote as to whom will be in charge - unlike the House of Lords?

Why ?, because it is a stitch up with a Spitzenkandidat nominated by a European political groupings yet not agreed by the U.K. ???

Why ?, because the UK’s view that the current EU President was not fit for purpose was overridden by Germany - Is our PM fit for purpose?

Why ?, because he would continue the work of ‘ever closer union’ - We do have a veto.

Why ?, because that is what Germany and France want - I'd say that's far, far better than those countries going to war repeatedly.

Why ?, because both see national benefits in having a captured market for manufactured goods and agriculture and wish to see a United States of Europe

What is wrong with that ? My vote cannot stop it......

I remember how things were before we jouned the EEC. We're far better off in than out.

And being outside of the Eu stops none of the above. Indeed it opens up our engagement with even more countries and potential migrants......

It was our own money...they gave us access to some of our own money and you want us to be grateful......

Yes, because the UK government has a shocking record of not investing in innovation. We've always been happy to be behind the curve. If paying into a pot enables institutions and private companies to access resources which leads to innovation and improvement then it's a good thing, rather than the money being tied up in whatever bizarre project the government of the day chooses to invest in.

I don't believe that to be true Pete. Only today the CBI have said the government's R&D targets won't be met until 2051. They have also shown no willingness to increase migration, quite the opposite in fact. There is a reason both industry and academia oppose Brexit - they don't share your optimism.

You do realise that the U.K. used to invent and innovate before joining Europe, and that we have U.K. tax relief schemes on R&D programmes......

Latest Yougov poll....

Remain has it on that poll from Labours custom Union all along to all in LibDems and Greens. I suspect if that's the result we will carry on the same path as now, Corbyn as kingmaker or election.

Nonsense, the UK has destroyed its own manufacturing base by chasing and basing most of its eggs in economy basket (service sector). Lets rewrite 80s and ignore Thatcher economic war on the working classes.

You do realise we were in the EU during the 80’s. Thatcher did not have an economic war on the working classes, she had a war with out of control union leaders that were decimating industry and business......

It's not quite as simple as that Pete. Innovation today typically needs a number of things:

  • A strong research base (academia has come out strongly in favour of remain both to ensure a strong supply of students/researchers, and access to research funding. It's also worth considering that research with participants from multiple countries, which is the requirement for H2020 funding, tends to do better in terms of both citations and patents)
  • Ease of starting a business, which is an area Britain does very well at, both in terms of the legal framework and finance
  • Talent to grow the business, which must be a concern, especially as startups often have to bootstrap so probably can't meet the projected salary requirements for early hires
  • A large market to sell into, which is a historical reason why the EU hasn't had the same startups as the US, as American startups have a huge domestic markets (China likewise). Leaving the single market doesn't seem a good thing in that context

The problem is the remain vote is far more split and I’m not sure that there is a majority for remain as by my calculation 47% are leavers with 7% ‘other’ which could be anything.

Regarding the Brexit party and a manifesto. That's irrelevant in the context of the EU elections. A vote for the Brexit party will be a protest vote against the undemocratic (on the Brexit issue) main parties. Hopefully, if the outcome is consistent with the polls, the main parties will get the message.

Oh right, nothing about Thatcher montarism policy which sank manufacturing output, and guess what led to it collapse. Brexit Party and it's advocates is just snake oil sales.
