I think that's actually true in a way though. Not the intelligence one, but in terms of athleticism, pace and power I think black people tend to simply be genetically ahead of whites.

I think commentary tends to lean towards the most visually obvious. I don't think by highlighting pace and power that they're saying they're not intelligent, it's just the most obvious aspect of their game they comment on.

Spot the common theme here for example.

You're not going to comment on Akinfenwa's intelligence in commentary too often when his other assets are so ridiculously obvious.

What about that the study specifically mentions criticisms of intelligence being weighted toward players with darker skin?

Also, I might have missed something but how does an abstract on potential increase in osteoporosis in certain races have bearing on biased commentary?

Give him a break he posted a fox news piece which they took from a journal that in the past has published nonsense. Neither fox or the journal did any research or reviewing of the actual study.

Conversely I've seen plenty of incidences where white players "aren't strong enough in the tackle", "gets brushed away too easily" and so on - it's simply a bias towards focusing on the obvious. It's lazy but not racism.

Bone mineral density/bone mass is just a quick example of how black people are generally bigger/stronger/have a physical advantage over whites in general.

"Blacks tend to have longer limbs with smaller circumferences, meaning that their centers of gravity are higher compared to whites of the same height," said Adrian Bejan, Jones' co-author, an engineering professor at Duke University. "Asians and whites tend to have longer torsos, so their centers of gravity are lower."

Racial differences are a thing. We aren't all the same. Should be acknowledged and celebrated actually.

The first comment gets dangerously close to the argument that's often trotted out of 'it's a compliment' to suggest black people are naturally strong, or have other stereotyped physical differences. It's quite odd to use studies (from pop science or Fox News!) about general populace when the research linked is related to a sport in which all the players will be physically above average? It's a selective group, not a collection of random members of the population.

Do you honestly think there's no racial differences then mate?

Never got said did it?

Yes. My point is the reason black players are often praised for power and pace is because often they're simply more powerful and quicker than white players, because they are predisposed to be more likely to have certain athletic traits.

You seem to disagree.

Is that the reason? Or is that people are predisposed to view black men in a certain way? Or is racial bias not a thing, to take your mode of argument?

Football players are physically gifted and strong, you showed links to studies, of debatable quality, about the general populous.

It’s not about not seeing race, not acknowledging racial differences, it’s about how people view and comment on people of differing races especially if it has a negative impact.

There's a possibility racial bias is the reason, but I think it's much more likely it's just statements of fact from commentators who commentate on the most obvious.

So if black players are generally quicker and bigger than white players, then generally the commentator will highlight that more often. Like if you did a study on women's tennis in the 2000s, you'd get a massive "racial bias" towards commentary about Serena and Venus Williams being "strong and powerful", but in reality it's just a statement of fact isn't it?

Given in the general populous that blacks are in all probability stronger and quicker than whites by nature, sport will reflect the same or even exacerbate that difference - hence why you see the 100m world record holders are very much dominated by black sprinters.

I dont get why describing a footballer as powerful and strong is a reflection of their skin colour. Or because of it.

A footballer is tall, short, quick, slow, because they just are.

Most powerful and strong footballer that Ferguson managed at United was probably Mark Hughes. Or Jaap Stam. One the most deadly strikers he had was Andy Cole.

In short, dont get the angst.

It's just about the likelihood of a player being described as such.

For example, Lukaku you're going to describe as powerful every game. "Intelligent" in relation to football is barely ever going to be applied to him because of two reasons. One, he has the technique of an actual donkey. And two, his entire game is about strength, power and finishing.

Now compare that to, I dunno, Bruno Fernandes. "Intelligent" is going to be used much more often.

It's just a fact that there's more "cute" footballers that have a paler skin tone, and more black footballers who are powerful and quick. Messi, Ronaldo, Fernandes, Rooney, Sigurdsson (lol), Bernard, Coutinho and so on. Compare to Bolasie, Mane, Sane, Sterling, Lukaku et al. So given commentary is often about communicating the obvious quickly, it's no surprise to see the result of that study. For me it isn't racial bias; it's just statements of fact.

Looks like it would be a minefield to traverse all this, physical attributes are exactly just that. If someone is tall and powerful, what does it matter about race, that is a description of who they are. What's a commentator supposed to say as they win a strong tackle and go on a barnstorming run leaving three defenders in his wake? ..."he also likes to read books in his spare time".

Its looking for sommet that isnt there.

Best black player at Everton ever, well, he would be in the discussion, was Gueye. Best player in the world ever to many, is Pele.

Cos they are black? No. Cos they are ace ballers.

We can all just pick out examples that confirm our opinions.
