This isn't relevant to a mature discussion about who and what we glorify within our society, and how we do so.
I'm watching The Battle for Britain's Heroes on C4 now.
It is definitely worth a watch if you have any interest in a more rounded history of those we glorify.
Unfortunately we live in a society that has whitewashed the past and fails to live up to uncomfortable truths.
So much of our national psyche is connected to a half told history and there is a real sense of fragility coming to the fore as it is challenged.

The only way to achieve a truly united society is one that is proud of its country and its fellow people.
Too much division in our society at present - white, black, rich, poor, christian, muslim, gay, straight
The day we all look at one another as being just a fellow countryman and neighbour regardless of colour, class and everything else is the day we'll have achieved a utopian society.
Sadly that will never happen as we are constantly boxed into different groups and told to hate each other because of what ancestors did 100+ years ago.

I understand our history more than most but I don't loath the UK.

Nationalism is a weird concept as too much of it can be detrimental and create facism however a lack of it can create large divisions within society.
I always say to people who claim they hate the UK - "if you owned a company surely you would want your workers to love working for it otherwise productivity would surely be low"
And thats the same for a countries society imo - there is too much focus on grouping people in society but for me thats failing to realise that all you ultimately do is further divide and separate - I couldn't care less about someones skin colour or sexual orientation so why group it?

Surely a national society based on truth and rounded education would be stronger and fairer for all.

I agree mate - I just think by definition the more we group people in society the more separated we ultimately are.
I see where you are coming from, though I don't think that is what is happening.
I do think the more we whitewash history the harder it is to have a fairer society for all.

The problem is discrimination is everywhere in society- you could have a white christian hate another person for being muslim yet that same muslim could hate another person for being gay.
If society could find a way to end the need to group and seperate people thats the way I think we can finally end it.
I think we go about ending discrimination through a process of education and creating new, more honest narratives about our country.
