Dunlop's management had a poor record of investing in their UK plants and it had nothing to do with the unions. The same with Ford's, who would always try and brow beat us to accept any old crap with, 'Germany is more productive'. Yes they were because they invested twice as much in new machinery as they did in for example Halewood.

Indeed, and its something that is often forgotten in the rush to blame the unions and militancy for Britain's economic malaise in the 70s. The root cause of decline in British manufacturing was that British management was awful.
 
Its voluntary Pete,used to drink regularly though never enjoyed it,dont like spirits and besides the odd guiness pints bloat me

I'm not a shorts man, and rarely drink anything but wine over dinner at home, but I enjoy the company in the pub, it keeps me sane (ish)........
