Can I give a well deserved shout out to all the good Evertonians who have started contributing to this forum sub section in the past week.

A lot more representative balance now. Two weeks ago it was a load of right wing snobs sneering at scousers. Much better now.

@JonS we miss you man.
Can I echo this!

If Labour want to actually cut down on avoidance then they need to get actual tax advisers and accountants into hmrc. Lots of those things on the list work won't work in practice. The best way to get money back is by getting those trained at tax planning into the revenue.
Just give Labour credit where credit is due

Where are the Tories tax avoidance policies?

Totally agree. Whenever I have had dealings with HMRC staff I have found them to be totally lacking in knowledge and just about incompetent. At the same time my some of my ex-work colleagues teach more about tax than you'd ever care to know.

That would be fraught with danger; anyone going in there to do that with the intention of sorting it out would presumably be persona non grata at all the places where real money is made later on. What happened to Osita Mba would probably be revisited upon their heads a thousand-fold.

There have been so many staff cuts in the HMRC its not surprising as it's not an area they focus on now as much.

Apolitical creature here, but should point out that, strange as it may seem, the post labour budgets have seen more moves against false self-employment (IR35 introduced by labour 1999 but badly drafted that effectively HMRC almost stopped going after the "consultancy company" as the tribunal used to have to come down on the side of the company).
Additionally, a large proportion of incorporations in the UK were tax driven, (sole traders incorporating, a 50k profit would give an overall tax saving of about 4k), this has been eroded by changes in dividend taxation (5k per person untaxed, going down to 2k next year).
General Anti Avoidance Rule has been in force for 3 or 4 years already.
I'm not a political type, but all of the above could have been done under Labour.
The IR35 thing, in terms of users, the government/local govt/NHS were probably the largest users in terms of numbers.
Certainly in the NHS,since 6th April, the consultant has Tax and NI deducted at source so their invoice is paid net, but must still use the ltd co or use an umbrella company.
Also closed the Flat Rate Scheme (VAT) abuse by these companies.
Weirdly, the proposed Class 4 NI hike would have had a beneficial effect on sole traders incorporating again.

It's a grossly incompetent organisation. I'm in regular contact with them over clients and some of their staff are embarrassingly useless. It's not just staff cuts, it's their internal training which is far lower than external professional bodies. And they're the ones meant to be enforcing legislation!
