He's provided the letter that Reeves wrote to government. A quick Google search of the companies contained will tell you that he is right. Over to you...

The government waste of time is that civil servants investigate and Gove has to respond to it. His letter is provided in one of the links and is pretty excoriating of Reeves' incompetence. Well worth a read. A waste of time nevertheless since we already know Reeves is hopeless.

Ok, honey!

One of my favourite books on British politics is the broken compass by Peter Hitchens, where he quite rightly points out that the 2 main political parties don't really reflect the divisions that exist in Britain

Outdated to have any real relevance on Labour, its a much changed Party dynamic since that book was written.

Hitchen if he had any fixed principle about him would be more worried about whose money gets the party policy...

Some of you asking for Labour to make clear what they would do should be careful. Because you only read the Guardian, the Canary and MSNBC you miss some of the corkers that a more balanced press coverage would show you about Labour's great wisdom.

A classic was that great Blairite fool Rachel Reeves, now in Labour's shadow cabinet, got burned big time when she sent a letter to the government claiming there was a list of companies that could provide PPE and that they had offered their services to the government but the government didn't get back to them... these people could make up the shortfall apparently and get the country on track... haha

Goverment time then wasted investigating these companies found that
A. These companies never did contact the government.
B. They were completely unsuitable! One was a football agent offering to provide ventilators.... some were people that provide up to 500 gowns a week, equivalent 1.5 gowns per hospital... One was an events company in Surrey offering “supplying masks and respirators from China”. The company claims to provide the “ultimate corporate day experience…[with] delicious cuisine from sushi to sandwiches, hot and cold buffets, BBQ, breakfast, snacks and lunch”. Others were a company that was only formed in February ... yet Labour's top brass thinks these are a reliable mass producing partner for government. One more: The Whent, a company that exists to reduce dependence on plastic, peculiarly offering to produce tests and also gloves. Medical gloves are largely made of plastic. the company makes canned mineral water but is now offering to make Covid tests.

For the mess the government has made of this. Put the Labour party in charge and there would be bedlam.

Guido a balanced view!!!!!

Well I never.

Except you can prove to us it's unbalanced if you want to... all the companies are listed. All you have to do is some google searches to prove to us it's wrong. Should be easy enough. Off you go...

Such a weird psyche to have to make an imagined scenario in your right wing pea head ''lol imagine Labour and Abbott in charge of this'' when the tories have handled it terribly in real life. If that makes you feel better to distract from reality about how badly Johnson has handled this then go off m8, makes you look an obsessed deflective weirdo though

I assume that's directed at me?

There's nothing wrong with that point of view except that ... Labour doesn't even agree with it. It supports the government on just about everything except apparently for a stay alert message. Labour had an opportunity to show it could be different - it would have been risky, but it could have hammered the government handling of the virus.

As I've said, from my point of view, Labour are good for nothing at the moment. All they do is support the government in which case we don't need them and they just give asinine advice see Reeves' nonsense above.

Looked at Network Medical Products based in Yorkshire, who are listed there, and they’ve gone from concept to production of CE approved visors in 4 weeks, and are able to supply 50,000 visors per week. Ended up saying they would sell abroad as government didn’t contact them back.

Seems reasonable to question the government whether they’re following up on all offers from companies to provide assistance, when companies themselves are saying they will have to sell products abroad due to no contact.

That's a good achievement, but in Reeves' letter (scroll to her appendix at the bottom) they were promising to supply 100,000 visors a week. A good news story nevertheless achieved in combination with their American sister company.

Yeah, I saw that. My point was more that the Guido blog is far from balanced, picking the companies which clearly couldn’t produce at scale, as examples of wasting government time, but ignoring the companies which had scaled up impressively, but had not been contacted back.

The letter from Reeves was simply questioning whether the government were looking to assess these companies’ offers, and pushing them to do it more quickly, given the PPE crisis underway.

An utter non story.

Except Reeves was saying these companies could alleviate a massive, urgent problem of a shortfall of PPE. Are you saying this is evidence to the contrary? You have found 1 company on the list so far that has actually produced (a positive) 50,000 units, yet it's only half the amount they and she promised per week. Hardly a sizable contribution to an urgent problem is it?

People like Reeves think they know better than the government, well it turns out they don't and some of what she suggested in that letter was absolutely absurd. Laughable suggestions for the government to pursue. I can't believe any professional writing that letter would not have investigated, even to the depth of a google search about these companies, before including them. So why bother to propose them? Is she lazy or just incompetent?

I don't care if you think it's a non-news story. It tells us something about the quality of the Labour shadow cabinet. People like Reeves think they know better than the government, well it turns out they don't and some of what she suggested in that letter was absolutely absurd, ridiculous options for the government that are imaginable. I can't believe she could have been a professional writing that letter and not investigated these companies at all. Why even propose them? Is she lazy or just incompetent? Yes, well done she found one out of a list of 20 that actually produce PPE but not at the level she promised.

You said to google the companies, so I googled that one. It’s the governments job to assess these offers and make a decision on whether they are feasible or not and whether to take them forward.

A non story, spun for the Guido mob.

You make it sound nearly as bad as giving a ferry contract to a company that didnt even have ferries which cost the taxpayer £50 million

... which is regurgitated here for our benefit
