IMO this was a stage managed stunt.

I think the “conversation” was recorded and made public with Ashcroft’s knowledge and approval.

“banter” my Aunt Sally......it was a strange form of “banter” and his “friend” wouldn’t be much of a “friend” if he acted on his own accord.

Why would Ashcroft do this?

To position himself for a leadership challenge if Corbyn has a bad day tomorrow and resigns on Friday.

So he say “weren’t my fault....I never liked Corbyn anyway”.

Anybody who thinks that Ashcroft has a chance of being Labour leader after that interview needs to take a long look at themselves.

This election really does feel like it's the left's last chance in all honesty

Lose here and it's either back to centrist Blair style policies or many more years in the wilderness whilst a strongly right leaning Tory party strengthens it's grip
Nope.

The "centre" (in reality the right) is in the wilderness. It's not even a political position now.

You're either for socialism or capitalism.

Dont expect the Blairites to come marching back in. It's not happening. Their infiltration will be reversed completely post election, whatever the outcome.

Indeed, look at this surge. By the 2029 election the 107 year old Jezzer will romp it. The two defeats he's had thus far are just warm ups for the glorious revolution to come.

You conflate 'Jezzer' with 'the left'.

He is the LP leader; he'll be succeeded by another on the democratic left...because the LP itself will be controlled by the democratic left.

Personalising this will get you precisely nowhere.

To disparage our man is one thing, but to be friends with a Tory?

Meh, lots of people in politics are friends with people who have very different political views. Anyone in Westminster who can't manage to get on with people with opposite views is seeing life through very narrow blinkers.

What you're saying isn't massively different to saying an Evertonian shouldn't have anything to with PSG because they're owned by Qataris suspected of supporting terrorism.

My gut feeling is a hung parliament or a slim Conservative working majority (still can't see a Labour victory), which will in turn push Labour back towards the centre.

After another five years of the Cons. in power with the turbulence that Brexit will bring, the population will move away from them and the centre will attract.

I've said it before: a Blair like figure (even with his numerous negatives) would whitewash this elections, whereas we're left with two more extreme leaders.

Terrorists are our friends.

I'm not sure if Labour would move to the centre even if they're defeated at this election. There'll be enough left-wing MPs to nominate some very leftist candidate to replace Corbyn and the membership is sure to go for the most left wing person standing. I imagine they'd have enough sense not to elect another London MP but you never know.

Stand ye calm and resolute.
Like a forest close and mute.
With folded arms and looks which are, weapons of unvanquished war.

And if then the tyrants dare, let them ride among you there.
Slash, and stab, and maim and hew.
What they like, that let them do.

With folded arms and steady eyes, and little fear, and less surprise.
Look upon them as they slay, till their rage has died away:

Then they will return with shame, to the place from which they came.
And the blood thus shed will speak, hot blushes on their cheek

Rise, like lions after slumber, in unvanquishable number.

Shake your chains to earth like dew, which in sleep had fallen on you.

Ye are many.

They are few.

Have you not seen the youth vote, mate?

It’s all just a matter of time...

Very much this.

The Tories might just win this election, but, going forwards, the demographics are against them. A younger, half competent leader, pushing much the same policies will likely continue to win us votes from younger people. At the moment, it's hard to see us winning a majority in our own right in the next election, or even two, but, so long as the Scots stay in the Union, our chances of running a minority govt, or a formal coalition look pretty good ... unless we screw it up by shooting ourselves in the foot.
