Well no; a fair comparison would be costs of construction and operation of both. Given why free schools are set up and the way school budgets work (ie most of it goes on staff) I am amazed why you or anyone apart from Toby Young* would think they’d ever be cheaper than a standard comprehensive.

* someone else paid a fortune by the state

I wouldn't really argue that they would be cheaper tbh. Lower costs is one supposed virtue of opening up supply to numerous suppliers, but in sectors where Baumol's disease is so high, I would imagine the bigger advantage would be in encouraging a diversity of approaches that would support innovation. I don't know much about the education sector, but this is certainly a huge challenge in healthcare, as even within the single supplier system there is both tremendous variance in terms of quality of service, and appalling sharing of best practice between those delivering great service and those delivering poor service.

If a monopoly provider could get that simple thing right then it would be a good start, even before exploring their ability to integrate ideas they've discovered from outside the NHS. I mean they've been looking at Dutch (non-profit) community care provider Buurtzorg for seemingly years without ever making any progress with it. Should anyone dare suggest that we invite Buurtzorg themselves to have a go however, then the cries of privatisation would be rampant.

Oh come on, you're not that naive are you? So you're saying that only the state can do anything at all without a profit motive? Seriously? All the charities and other non-profit organisations that aren't in any way related to the state are fabrications of our imagination? You're falling into the trap of thinking that the only possible noble and just way of delivering anything is via the government. It's not only very out dated, but I'd argue also very dangerous.

When did I say that?

Sorry, what is your point? That the government should be praised for EFS when it caused the requirement for something like that to exist? You’ll be celebrating their achievement in the food bank field next.
No, that Free Schools provide options for kids that mainstream, curriculum based education does not. Free schools have given educational opportunities to kids that would be on the scrap heap educationally otherwise, arguably thanks to the desire of people to innovate and help. I’m not exactly sure how the parallels to poverty can be drawn, but whatever.

What did he say ?.....
take back ,energy. water rail, stop corporate tax evasion, put workers on large companies boards and give them shares , start a think tank to look at the economy led by some nobel prize winner to look at stopping a future economic collapse,( which might not be to far away as the amount of worldwide debt is at records levels, reports out last week warning about it in the USA)

Did he not mention that the EU wants no state monopolies like rail that do not have to compete with rivals to win franchises.....should be interesting......

And this is why McDonell should keep his mouth shut.

A lot of companies in Germany do this to make their employees feel empowered.

A lot of companies in the UK do it as well. But HMRC get hardly any tax from it. Under his idea/scam they will; a lot. Back of an envelope exercise suggests £1 Billion, plus, from Shell alone. Every year.

But it wont actually be a tax as such, more the Government taking dividends directly from the companies as a sort of shareholder, but they actually wont hold the shares.

Some might call it theft.

Hang on, could you explain this a bit more?
